Women’s Box Championship Day Four Recap

Finland – Australia

Australia improved to 2-1 at the women’s box championship with a 27-0 win over Finland in the first game of action on day four.

Six players recorded five or more points for Australia. Kate Hooper led the way with six goals and four points while Charlotte Whinnen added six goals. Eleni Megoran and Abbie Burgess-Brice both had two goals and four assists.

Australia allowed just five shots from Finland throughout the game.

Australia is now in third place in Pool B with one game remaining against Germany on Tuesday.

Canada – Germany

Canada rolled again with a 28-0 win over Germany to improve to 3-0.

One of the gold medal favorites, Canada is on its way to a top spot in Pool B. Canada is yet to allow in goal in Utica and has scored 85 in three games.

Seven players had five or more points for Canada. On Monday, Erica Evans led the way with four goals and five assists. Dacia Cordingley added three goals and three assists and Dana Dobbie provided four assists as well.

Canada’s imperious defense allowed just eight shots.

Germany will be back in action against Australia in a battle of 2-1 teams on Tuesday. Canada wraps pool play against Ireland.

Haudenosaunee – Hong Kong, China

The Haudenosaunee won their second game in a row in Pool A action with a 17-3 victory over Hong Kong, China.

Hong Kong hung tough in the first half with three goals, but after halftime the Haudenosaunee shut out their opponents with 11 unanswered goals.

Ferrah Blackbird paced the Haudenosaunee offense with six goals and three assists. Nine players in total got on the scoresheet with Ava Gabriel posting four points and Trysten Burns and Timmia Bomberry notching three.

Chelsea Doolittle made 19 saves including 13 in the scoreless second half.

Sally Tang scored twice for Hong Kong while Claudia Chan and Sum Tang combined for 45 saves.

The Haudenosaunee close pool play against the Netherlands on Tuesday while Hong Kong gets a day off before the play-in round of the women’s box championship.

Netherlands – England

England scored seconds into overtime to sink the Netherlands, 11-10, after a back-and-forth contest in the women’s box championship.

The two teams traded runs all game and England led by one heading into the fourth quarter. The Netherlands grabbed a 9-8 lead but then England rallied back to lead 10-9 with under a minute to play on a shorthanded goal from Laura Beaman.

On the same powerplay, the Netherlands recovered right off the draw and tied the game back up in the final minute on a goal from Manon Loos.

But on the first sequence of overtime, Leah Catton forced a turnover on the Netherlands after the draw, and found a streaking Zara Russell who buried her opportunity for the England win.

Leah Catton finished with four goals and the game-winning assist. Alex Drew had four points.

Loos and Ryley Black both had three goals each for the Netherlands.

The Netherlands will face the Haudenosaunee tomorrow while England takes on the United States
