Canada – Ireland
Canada completed its immaculate start to the women’s box championship with a 28-0 win over Ireland on Tuesday in the first game of the championships to be played at the Mary C. Winder Community Center.
Canada finished 4-0 in Pool B to claim the top spot and allowed zero goals in four games, while scoring 113.
Tuesday’s contest was another routine win for the Canadians, who led 11-0 by the end of the first quarter.
15 different players scored goals for Canada and 10 had three or more points. Dana Dobbie led the attacking cast with four goals and two assists and Erica Evans also had five goals and an assist.
Alice Loughran made 30 saves for Ireland and Becky Moloney made 12.
Canada will be in the quarterfinals on Thursday against the winner of a play-in game.
Ireland will appear next in a play-in game against Hong Kong, China on Wednesday.
Australia – Germany
Australia earned its third win in Utica with a hard-fought 13-9 battle against Germany.
Australia improved to 3-1 and took the second spot in Pool B ahead of the playoffs. Germany posted a 2-2 record and took the third spot in Pool B.
The two teams were both up for an intense contest on Tuesday morning, with Australia leading 6-4 at halftime thanks to a second quarter power play goal from Charlotte Whinnen and a late goal from Ava Dorinko.
Germany tied it up at 7-7 six minutes into the third quarter, but Australia went on a key three goal run capped by a shorthanded goal from Whinnen to lead 10-7.
Laura Breakhuis added another massive shorthanded goal in the fourth quarter to restore the lead to three with six minutes to play that helped Australia see out the win.
Whinnen and Kate Hooper both finished with five points as the expected leaders of the Australia attack. Abbie Burgess-Brice added four points and Posy O’Keefe stepped up with three assists.
Goalkeeper Natalie Miller kept Germany at bay with 41 saves on an 82% save percentage.
Tessa Helf, Toni Garbe and Marlene Steyer all recorded three points for Germany.
Australia will play in the quarterfinals on Wednesday against England, while Germany, the third place team in Pool A, will take on the Haudenosaunee.
United States – England
The United States completed an undefeated pool play campaign at the women’s box championship with a 28-2 win over England on Tuesday.
The United States finished 4-0 and took the top spot in Pool A. England was third in the pool with a 2-2 record.
The U.S. scored 99 goals in its four games and allowed just 11. On Tuesday, the United States jumped to a 6-1 lead after 15 minutes and went into halftime up 18-1.
Melissa Sconone starred again in the American attack with three goals and six assists. Emily Hawryschuk, Charlotte North and Erin Bakes all finished with six or more points.
On the day, the USA outshot England 101-12 and Taylor Moreno made 10 saves.
Lucy Mayers made 59 saves for England.
The United States will play in the quarterfinals on Thursday against the winner of a play-in game. England will play on Thursday against Australia in a classic rivalry matchup in a quarterfinal.
Haudenosaunee – Netherlands
The Haudenosaunee won their third game in a row on Tuesday at the Mary C. Winder Community Center, easing by the Netherlands, 19-4.
The Haudenosaunee finished 3-1 in Pool A and took second place. The Netherlands were 1-3 and in fourth place.
The Netherlands scored three times in the first 20 minutes to stay within two goals, but the Haudenosaunee ended the first half with three unanswered goals to lead 8-3.
The Haudenosaunee tacked on five more goals in the first 10 minutes of the third quarter to put the Netherlands out of reach.
Trysten Burns tallied three goals and four assists to pace the Haudenosaunee, while Lindsay John, Tallis Tarbell and Ferrah Blackbird all posted hat tricks of their own.
The Haudenosaunee will play again on Thursday in the quarterfinals against Germany.
The Netherlands will be back on Wednesday in a play-in matchup against Finland.
