Canada Finishes Unbeaten as FIL Pool Play Ends

(ONONDAGA NATION) Medal favorites Canada and the Iroquois Nationals were victorious as pool play action concluded at the 2015 Federation of International Lacrosse World Indoor Lacrosse Championship on Wednesday.

Canada rolled over England 19-2 to finish pool play 4-0 and earn the No. 1 seed for bracket play, and a berth to the semifinals. Ryan Benesch had a team-high five goals for Canada and Shawn Evans, Curtis Dickson and Dhane Smith each added three goals. Evans led the Canadians with an impressive 10 assists. Cole Shafer had a pair of goals for England.

The Iroquois Nationals also secured a bye to the semifinals by beating the Czech Republic 17-4 to wrap up the No. 2 seed. After a scoreless first quarter, Lyle Thompson scored back-to-back goals to open the second quarter, but the Czech Republic hung around. The Iroquois lead was just 5-3 early in the third quarter, but the Iroquois then scored six consecutive goals and held the Czech Republic to just one goal over the final 24 minutes of the game. Thompson led the Iroquois with four goals to go along with three assists and Miles Thompson and Austin Staats each had three goals. Dominik Pešek led the Czech Republic with three goals.

The United States begins bracket play on Thursday with a quarterfinal match-up against Ireland. The U.S. went 2-2 in pool play to earn the No. 3 seed from the Blue Division. If the U.S. defeats Ireland, it will play the Iroquois Nationals in the semifinals on Friday.
