Puerto Rico, playing in its first World Lacrosse Women’s U19 World Championship, continued to surprise Monday, overwhelming the favored Haudenosaunee nation 12-8, to end Pool play with a perfect 4-0 record.
“I think because of our trust in each other’s ability to defend one on one, and the strength of our one on one defense,” said Delaney Rodriquez-Shaw. “ So, as we’re marking our attacker, we’ll be confident in our teammates being able to do their job as a defender.”
Team Puerto Rico, which features several players with NCAA experience, has outscored its four opponents 73 to 11. Puerto Rico has shown promise on both ends of the field with an attacking offensive and a swarming defense. Are they surprising their opponents?
“Definitely! People were doubting us, especially with this being our first time in the tournament,” said Natalie Pasini. “But after being able to go undefeated in pool play, with a win over a great team such as this (Haudenosaunee), I think we’ve definitely shown that Puerto Rico has some great athletes, and that we have a strong group of girls.”
Haudenosaunee Nation had outscored their opponents 64-8, almost as dominant as Puerto Rico. In Monday’s game, Puerto Rico came out firing straight out of the gate, taking a 5-1 lead after one quarter of play. Haudenosaunee Nation narrowed the gap going into half-time.
Puerto Rico would head into the half leading 7-4. Haudenosaunee wouldn’t go down without fight, constantly narrowing the gap, but the stellar Puerto Rican defense would prove too much.
