Tom Sutton Named Chair of Officiating for World Lacrosse

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – September 18, 2019
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO, USA — World Lacrosse announced today the appointment of Tom Sutton as its Chair of Officiating. In this newly-created role, Sutton will oversee all matters related to officiating for international women’s, men’s and indoor lacrosse, along with the new disciplines currently being refined and finalized by World Lacrosse.
Sutton, who has been serving as Men’s Officiating Subcommittee Chair since 2017, will report to World Lacrosse Technical Director Don Blacklock.
“Tom brings a wealth of officiating experience to this important role,” said Blacklock. “He has done a tremendous job with the men’s program and World Lacrosse will be well-served with Tom overseeing its entire officiating program.”
Sutton possesses a diverse background in officiating. He has been a high-ranking on-field official both internationally and in the United States. In addition to his officiating success, he has held or currently holds various management roles, which correlate to the continued development of educational tools and resources for World Lacrosse officials.
Sutton has been involved in international lacrosse since 2003, when he officiated in the first Federation of International Lacrosse (now World Lacrosse) Indoor World Championship. In 2006, he was selected to work the Gold Medal Game in the FIL Men’s World Championship. Following these two World Championship assignments, Sutton turned his attention to the officiating management, skill development and instructional side of the international game. He has worked as a coach and mentor for officials, served as Referee in Chief and Deputy Referee in Chief at major international events and, most recently, served as Men’s Officiating Subcommittee Chair.
“It is exciting to have the opportunity to fill a newly-developed role that affords endless opportunities,” said Sutton. “There is a mountain of work to be done to bring the World Lacrosse vision to life. I look forward to working with many individuals around the globe to get this accomplished.”
