First Time Winners Proving Lacrosse is Growing Globally

Results, Standings and Sunday Schedule
Of the nine teams competing in the World Lacrosse Women’s U19 World Championship for the first time ever, six have recorded their first ever win — including two on Saturday, another historic fact that is driving the globalization of the sport.
“This is a great sign for Lacrosse’s continued global growth and expansion,” said World Lacrosse CEO Jim Scherr. “We are seeing the future for the sport here in Peterborough with strong performances from five different continents. That’s a great testament to competitive growth.”
The opening three days of the tournament have provided various styles of play from the aggressive attacking styles of the teams from Asia to the speed and athleticism of Kenya to the strong defenses from countries like Mexico and Puerto Rico.
Consider the following six teams with first-time wins:

China – defeated Jamaica, 18-5 (Thursday)
Chinese Taipei – defeated Ireland, 11-8 (Saturday)
Hong Kong — defeated Israel, 11-7 (Thursday)
Kenya – defeated Jamaica, 17-1 (Saturday)
Mexico – defeated Chinese Taipei, 10-6 (Friday)
Puerto Rico – defeated Hong Kong, 21-2 (Friday)

“It’s nice because we are getting the chance to represent our country,” said Michelle Wesonga from Team Kenya. “There were many of us, but only 18 were able to be chosen. Because it’s our first time, people may think we are here just to have a good time, but we knew that we had a serious job to do, to represent our country.”
Kenya’s style of play has caught many spectator’s eyes in the Lacrosse-savvy country of Canada. Kenya’s offense was on full display Saturday as they scored 17 goals. Another upstart program, Puerto Rico, scored 21 times.
“It’s awesome being around everyone and getting to represent our island-nation,” said Sarah Cederstrand of Team Puerto Rico. “A lot of us have only known each other for a couple of months, and to see us playing so well together is really awesome. Just being in the dorms together, playing together, practicing together — we’re just always together and it’s just really nice getting the chance to bond together.”
Still trying to capture their first-ever win are Belgium, Ireland and Jamaica. With each passing game, however, these teams are gaining international experience.
“It’s a very surreal moment because I get to share a big moment like this with team members that I have been training with for months,” said Jada Williams of Team Jamaica. “We have been playing very well, and giving other nations a challenge. Regardless of the score, we’re going to enjoy the experience.”
