BIRMINGHAM, ALA. —The Federation of International Lacrosse attended the competition management meetings for the 2021 World Games in Birmingham, Ala., offering a next step toward the vision of eventually becoming part of the Olympic Program.
Thirty-four sports will be included in the World Games, scheduled July 15-25, 2021. More than 3,600 athletes and officials are expected at the event, which is recognized by the International Olympic Committee. This will be the second time Lacrosse will be included in the World Games, which will be celebrating its 40thAnniversary.  Women competed in Poland in the World Games 2017 and the men will compete as well in 2021.
“It is a wonderful opportunity for our sport’s elite players, both men and women, to be part of a multi-sport event. It will be vastly different than our World Championships in that regard,” said Clark. “Birmingham has a great deal to offer, and the opportunity to bring together more than 100 countries in a showcase of sport will be very special for all those involved. Certainly Lacrosse will benefit tremendously.”
Clark added that the International World Games Association (IWGA), and the Birmingham Organizing Committee (BOC), have been very gracious in their hospitality and have extended a warm welcome to delegates from around the world.
“The opportunity to interact with these delegates has been valued, and there has been a great deal of knowledge and learning shared between sports in just a very short space of time,” said Clark. “2021 is indeed gearing up to be a pinnacle year for our sport as we continue on our Olympic pathway journey.”
