(DELMAR, NY) Shelley Maher, the Women’s Director of the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL), announced today, Wednesday, May 16, that the organization has awarded the 2015 Under-19 World Championship to Scotland.
The 2015 event will be the sixth time these games have been held.
The University of Edinburgh will serve as the site venue as the ancient capital will welcome teams for the Opening Ceremonies on 23 July with the gold medal game scheduled for 1 August. At the 2011 tournament in Hanover, Germany, the United States defeated Australia 14-11 in the gold medal game.
“We are very pleased to have Scotland host the next edition of the Under-19 World Championship,” said Maher. “Scotland is a country rich in lacrosse history and Edinburgh was the site of the 1993 World Cup; the organizing committee from Lacrosse Scotland has a solid group of leadership that is not only passionate about the sport but also proud to represent the legacy of their homeland.”
“It is a thrill to welcome the world back to Scotland,” commented Lorna Powell, who will act as event coordinator. “We are pleased to be able to serve the growing number of world lacrosse players in a venue that is both historic and state-of-the-art.” Powell, currently a member of the Lacrosse Scotland committee, served as a player, captain, and coach for the Scottish national team before representing her country as an umpire at multiple World events.
The event will be staged at the historic University of Edinburgh, where the Peffermill Sports Complex is recognized as one of the finest lacrosse facilities in the continent. The 27-acre spread will feature eight playing pitches, facilitating the needs of a 16-team tournament. The complex has hosted a number of prominent international tournaments, including the 2011 Golden Oldies World Hockey tournament, the Touch Rugby World Cup of 2011, and the 2009 Archery EuroNations competition. Peffermill is an accredited pre-Olympic facility.
The University of Edinburgh was a founding member of Lacrosse Scotland and is recognized as one of the United Kingdom’s leading sports universities. The complex recently enjoyed a f4.8 million extension plan, including a 6,000 sq. meter state-of-the-art sport and fitness space.
