Peterborough, Ontario, Canada — The General Assembly of World Lacrosse overwhelmingly approved a recommendation from the Board of Directors to admit Ghana as the newest member of the international federation for men’s and women’s lacrosse. With the admission of Ghana, membership in World Lacrosse now stands at 63 National Governing Bodies.
Ghana becomes the third member of World Lacrosse from the Continent of Africa, joining Kenya and Uganda.
The decision was taken here this afternoon during Day One of the World Lacrosse General Assembly.
In other business, World Lacrosse President Sue Redfern highlighted a number of significant achievements for the international federation during the past 12 months, including the introduction of a new name and brand framework , growth in organization capabilities and significant strides in international relations. President Redfern also announced Michael Kennedy of Ireland will lead a Constitutional Review Group that will examine ways to continue improving the World Lacrosse governance structure and operation, particularly in light of the rapid change the international federation is currently experiencing.
Chief Executive Officer Jim Scherr reported on progress during the past year against a series of strategic priorities, including areas such as support for member-National Governing Bodies and Continental Federations through best practice seminars and educational resources, broadcast production and distribution, anti-doping education and raising the profile of lacrosse globally.
The General Assembly also worked through a series of proposed rule changes for international women’s lacrosse, a complete summary of which will be published on the World Lacrosse web site at a later date.
