The top four seeds – Canada, the United States, Australia and Japan – won their matchups in the quarterfinals at the 2024 World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship in Hong Kong, China on Wednesday.
Australia will take on the United States in the first semifinal on Friday at Mong Kok Stadium at 4 p.m. HKT followed by a matchup between Canada and Japan at 7 p.m. on the same field.
The placement play was entertaining as well on day seven with competitive matchups between the eight teams including two one-goal thrillers won by Ireland and Chinese Taipei.
Australia managed the strong defense of Wales and a morning rainstorm with a well-measured effort to take care of the first quarterfinal by a 11-5 scoreline.
The United States pounced early on Puerto Rico to make a statement in its first playoff match, scoring 11 goals in the first quarter en-route to a 31-6 victory.
Japan and England dueled in another showcase of international lacrosse, but Japan’s speed and energy proved to be too much in a 12-6 win. Japan will make its first semifinal appearance ever in a World Lacrosse women’s championship.
Canada closed out the quarterfinals with a performance befitting of the top seed that led to a 25-2 result against Italy. Canada was similarly impressive out of the gate with a 9-0 first quarter.
In addition to the two semifinals, the four losing quarterfinalists will resume action tomorrow against each other in compelling placement matches. Germany, Korea, Jamaica and Scotland will all return to action as well.
