Bold Comes Up Big in Canada’s 11-9 Comeback Win over Iroquois

(ONONDAGA NATION) Canada rallied to score the last four goals and defeat the Iroquois Nationals 11-9 in its world indoor lacrosse championship opener Sunday. The Nationals scored first, jumped to a 4-1 lead, and led 5-3 after the first quarter despite being outshot 15-9. It was 6-4 at halftime.
The Nationals led 8-4 in the fifth minute of the third quarter when Canada rallied with three goals in 1 minute, 21 seconds. Matthews scored on a power play at 11:14 and got another at 11:55, and Dickson connected with one of his patented fade-away sidearm shots at 12:35. Canada pulled within 8-7.
Hiana Thompson made it 9-7 early in the fourth quarter. But then Corbeil scooped a loose ball in Iroquois territory and scored on a breakaway and Matthews tied it 9-9 from the side of the crease with 11:53 remaining. Canada finished on a 7-1 run.
Shattler then put a ball behind Bold, but it did not count as a goal because the Iroquois were caught with too many men on the floor and penalized.
Dawson beat Angus Goodleaf for the go-ahead goal on a low shot from a distance. MacIntosh evaded a check for a clear path to the net to score and cap the comeback.
Both teams had their opportunities. The Iroquois outshot Canada 57-52. Bold made three saves on an Iroquois power play at the end of the third quarter and carried that momentum into the fourth quarter. The Nationals scored just one goal in the final 25:21.

Serbia 11, Germany 10
Late fourth-quarter goals by Ryan Ferizovic and Ryan Pavic gave Serbia (1-2) a thrilling 11-10 win over Germany (1-2). Neither team led by more than three goals in the game. Alex Gajic scored four goals for the Serbs. Ilija Gajic had two goals and three assists. Brendan Shea led Germany with three goals and an assist.

USA 14, Czech Republic 7
The United States bounced back from a tournament-opening loss with a resounding 14-7 win over the Czech Republic. Kevin Buchanan led the way for the U.S. (1-1), recording a hat trick midway through the second quarter and propelling the Americans to a 12-4 halftime lead. Garrett Thul also scored thrice, bookending halftime with a 12-yard score one second before the break and a close-range tally 1:21 into the third quarter. The Czech Republic dropped to 1-1.

Israel 12, Ireland 6
Israel responded to a surprising loss Saturday against Germany with a convincing 12-6 win Sunday over Ireland. The Israelis (2-1) outshot the Irish 69-35. Bryan Hopper led the charge with three goals and three assists. Kyle Bergman added three goals and an assist. Ireland’s Chad Culp had two goals and two assists in the losing cause. Ireland fell to 2-1. Combined with Germany’s loss to Serbia, Israel clinched the top seed in the Green Division.

Finland 13, Turkey 10
Finland came back from an early five-goal deficit and scored the last five goals of the game to defeat Turkey 13-10. Robert Raittila and Roope Jokela scored four goals each to lead the Fins. The turning point came late in the second quarter. Trailing 6-1 with 3:16 left, Finland (2-1) bookended halftime with five unanswered goals in a seven-minute span to tie it. Dave Dariso’s goal gave Turkey (1-2) a 10-8 lead with 9:16 remaining in the game before Finland’s decisive game-ending run that included two goals by Jame Aaltonen, who added four assists in the win.

Australia 21, Switzerland 3
Australia started on a nine-goal run and never looked back, defeating Switzerland 21-6. Jeff Joy finished with five goals and four assists. Rodney Maher and Peter Kwas added three goals apiece in the win. The Aussies (3-0) won 24 of 31 faceoffs and clinched the top seed in the Red Division. Switzerland (0-3) remained winless.
