Mexico claimed the second win of day two at the 2024 World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship in Hong Kong, China, with a 17-11 victory over Scotland.
Mexico bounced back to 1-1 after an opening day loss to Italy to keep its Pool C hopes afloat, while Scotland was playing its first game.
The start of the game portended potentially tired legs for Mexico, as Scotland jumped out to a 7-1 lead with a goal on nearly every offensive possession.
But for the second day in a row, Mexico staged a furious run, scoring six goals in a row across the halftime break to tie the game at 7-7. Scotland retook the lead at 8-7, and Mexico, unfazed, delivered a five-goal knockout punch to take a 12-8 lead.
The Mexico supporting section was instrumental in its team’s momentum swings, and the team has three five-goal runs or better in two days.
The two teams traded goals the rest of the way but Mexico ultimately saw out a comfortable 17-11 win.
Mexico’s remontada was largely keyed by Elena Torres, who finished the game with eight goals and an assist in the standout performance of the championship so far. Torres had two separate, personal 3-0 runs in the game and finished as the player of the match.
Kendall Conrad added five goals for Mexico and Lola Aguirre delivered in multiple areas with three goals, three assists and four draw controls. Bella McCullough added six saves.
Scotland’s attack was led by Carys Bucknall, who totaled four goals and an assist. Robyn MacDonald finished with a 6/7 rate on draw controls and Katie Hiley and Anna Hutchinson both had win rates over 50 percent.
Mexico has a day off until Sunday, when it faces New Zealand in another well-matched Pool C clash at 8 p.m. HKT. Scotland will have to face pool favorite Australia on Friday at 5 p.m.
