Italy holds off Mexico in rainy thriller at Kowloon Tsai

In its first ever match at a women’s U20 championship, Italy outlasted Mexico in a 15-11 thriller on a rainy afternoon at Kowloon Tsai Sports Ground.

Italy raced out to a 4-1 lead before Mexico stormed back with seven goals in a row to take an 8-4 lead.

A rain delay lasting for over 30 minutes stemmed Mexico’s tide. Italy was able to recapture momentum with three goals following the delay to the cut the deficit to 8-6 at the break.

The Italians then came out of the gate hot to start the third quarter with three goals in just over three minutes en route to what was ultimately an eight-goal run to establish a 12-8 lead.

Mexico fought back to within two twice in the fourth quarter, but Italy had just enough offense to finish off a dramatic win in a superb atmosphere behind two loud supporting sections.

Cristiana Laracca was the player of the match for Italy with three goals and an assist. Casey Gilbert and Bella Germani both added four goals, and Elise Fawcett rounded out the high-octane offensive showing with two goals and an assist.

Hannah Gilland was instrumental in net for Italy with seven saves, including many second half stops.

Mexico turned up for a fierce battle and goalkeeper Bella McCullough continued her form at World Lacrosse championships with 10 saves.

Elena Torres and Lola Aguirre provided Mexico’s offense with lots of firepower and both finished with four goals and an assist.

Pool C remains wide open, and Italy can continue its impressive first-time campaign on Saturday against New Zealand at 2 p.m. HKT. Mexico will have another chance to get in the win column on Friday against Scotland at 2 p.m.
