Israel to Host 2018 FIL Men’s Lacrosse World Championship

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE(TORONTO, ONTARIO) Stan Cockerton, President of the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) is delighted to officially confirm that Israel is the host nation for the 2018 FIL Men’s Lacrosse World Championship.  The event, which will feature 50 participating countries and over 2,000 athletes, will take place 12-21 July next summer in the city of Netanya, Israel.

After Manchester, England withdrew from hosting the World Championship, Israel stepped in and submitted its first-ever bid to host the games in Netanya. Netanya was chosen to host the event due to the city’s achievements in sport and its success in hosting a variety of international competitions, including the European Swimming Championships, World Surfing Championships, international tennis tournaments and European Football Championships (under 21).Scott Neiss (far right), Executive Director for the Israel Lacrosse Association and Miriam Feirberg-Ikar (center-holding Israel Lacrosse jersey), Mayor of Netanya, hold a press conference on Wednesday, 23 May 2017, to announce Israel’s hosting of the 2018 FIL Men’s Lacrosse World Championship.Netanya Mayor, Miriam Feirberg-Ikar and Chairman of the Israel Lacrosse Association (ILA), Scott Neiss held a special press conference today to unveil the news to the Israeli press and public. It was pointed out at the press conference that Israel’s opportunity to host the World Lacrosse Championship comes in light of the country’s recent success in the international arena, in which Israel won second place in the 2016 European championship and seventh place in the most recent World Championship in 2014. In fact, Israeli teams have competed in every Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) and European Lacrosse Federation (ELF) event since their debut in 2012.

Netanya Stadium (courtesy GoNetanya.com)Netanya Stadium is a 13,610-seat multi-use stadium which opened in 2012. It served as a home field for the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championships and features 36 luxury suites, a VIP seating area and a modern state-of-the-art press box. The Stadium serves as the home field of Maccabi Netanya FC, as well as the temporary home of Maccabi Tel Aviv FC.

The Stadium will be utilized for a minimum of two evenings: opening ceremony and games on Thursday, July 12, and closing ceremony and medal games on Saturday, July 21.
