Israel withstood a late run from the host Hong Kong, China to pick up its second win, 12-7, of the 2024 World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship on Wednesday.
Israel put together a dominant first half with a 9-1 lead at the break, but Hong Kong responded with a strong third quarter.
Hong Kong scored five goals in a row to cut the lead to 9-6 just before the fourth. Israel found its footing again and went on a three goal run to put the game away.
Tori Bates helped keep Hong Kong at bay with eight saves on 17 shots faced, including five key stops in the second half.
Corey Kumin and Sarah Marcovici spearheaded Israel’s attack as a dynamic duo, with five goals and an assist for Kumin and three goals and three assists for Marcovici, who was named the player of the match.
Racheli Levy-Smith won seven of 11 draw controls, and helped Israel extend its lead early with a 5-1 advantage on draws in the second quarter. She also added a goal and two assists.
Anbie Chan led Hong Kong’s comeback effort with three goals and four draw control wins.
Both teams have a day off and play their last game of the championship in placement play on Friday.
Israel will take on Chinese Taipei for 13th place at 7 p.m. while Hong Kong, China will face New Zealand for 15th place at 4:30 p.m.
