Canada, the United States and Australia – the three defending medalists in the championship – all rolled to undefeated campaigns, winning each of their four games by more than 12 goals. Canada earned the top seed over the United States by virtue of conceding one less goal during pool play.
Japan and England both advanced out of a thrilling Pool D with 3-1 records on a goal-differential tiebreaker over Ireland, which also had a strong campaign. England narrowly edged Ireland on the final day of pool play to secure its spot, and Japan defeated England when it was on the brink of elimination a day earlier. Japan’s best finish in this championship is fifth and England is a defending semifinalist, adding to the stakes of their highly anticipated rematch in the quarterfinals.
Wales secured its spot in the playoffs with a dramatic 8-6 win over the Haudenosaunee in a win-and-in game on the final day of pool play, ensuring its record of finishing in the top eight in each edition of the championship stays in tact.
Puerto Rico is making its second appearance in the championship, and after surprising with an undefeated record and ninth place finish as an affiliate member in 2019, it has backed up its growth with a quarterfinal appearance in Hong Kong. Puerto Rico’s key win came against China on day five of pool play.
Italy is making its debut in the event and fended off fierce competition from three strong opponents in Mexico, New Zealand and Scotland in Pool C.
The United States will be on the hunt for a sixth gold medal in the championship, but has to do so from the second overall seed, with a potential matchup against Australia looming in the semifinals. Canada has looked ready for a title challenge and will have its eyes set on a rematch of the 2019 gold medal game with the USA.
