(COMMERCE CITY, CO) After a roughly two-hour delay for lightning, the Iroquois Nationals pulled out a 12-10 win over Australia to move into a tie with Canada for second place in the Blue Division. The game was tied 8-8 when it was stopped for lightning with 2:39 left in the third quarter.
Two hours later, play resumed and the Iroquois wasted little time as Jeremy Thompson scored with six seconds remaining to give the Iroquois a 9-8 lead.

The Iroquois scored three straight to open the fourth, two of them by Lyle Thompson and they maintained that lead until Nathan Stiglich scored a pair of extra man goals to close out the scoring for Australia.
Lyle Thompson led the Iroquois with four goals and Jeremy Thompson had two goals while winning 5-of-7 faceoffs. Stiglich led Australia with four and Tom Vickery made 13 saves.

United States Stays on Top in Blue Division
The United States controlled possession by winning 23-of-24 faceoffs with Greg Gurenlian going a perfect 12-for-12 and Chris Eck going 11-for-12 and defeated England 20-1 to improve to a perfect 4-0 in the Blue Division. England is winless at 0-4.
Eleven different players scored goals for the U.S. with Kevin Leveille and Marcus Holman each scoring three goals to lead the way. England goalie Nicholas Anderton faced a barrage of 65 shots from the U.S. and made 18 saves. Adrian Bennett had the lone goal for England.
Switzerland defeated Mexico 12-3 as Luis Zurkirchen scored six times despite a game effort from Mexico goalie Alec Gastony. Gastony made 17 saves for Mexico. Felix Stutz added a goal and three assists for Switzerland while Joe Vila led Mexico with a pair of goals.
New Zealand Advances to Face Scotland, Uganda Wins
New Zealand became the fourth team to advance towards the quarterfinals, and the big news was Uganda winning its first game ever. New Zealand topped the Netherlands 14-10 while Uganda outscored Korea 6-0 in the fourth quarter to win 10-9.
John Clayton scored three of his five goals in the fourth quarter to help New Zealand pull away from the Netherlands for a 14-10 win. New Zealand will meet Scotland tomorrow with a trip to the quarterfinals on the line.
The game was tied 8-8 late in the third quarter when Andrew Clayton scored on an assist from John Clayton with 1:16 to play to give New Zealand a 9-8 lead. New Zealand then outscored the Netherlands 5-2 in the final quarter to pull away.
John Clayton’s five goals led New Zealand while Mike Clayton had three goals and Andrew Clayton had four assists to go along with his game-winning goal. James van de Veerdonk led the Netherlands with five goals and also won 14-of-23 faceoffs.
Uganda trailed Korea 9-4 entering the final quarter and still trailed 9-8 with under a minute to play. Faisal Nsubuga scored with 44 seconds left to tie it and then Patrick Oriana won the ensuing faceoff and scored just eight seconds later to lift Uganda to the historic victory. Oriana led Uganda with three goals, all of them coming in the final quarter. Bumsuck Yoo led Korea with three goals and Kihun Kim made 13 saves.
In other action, Sweden rolled past Bermuda 19-4 behind six goals and three assists from Kevin Powers. Sten Jernudd added three goals and three assists. Bermuda’s Drew Jenkins had a goal and an assist and won 15-of-25 faceoffs.
Turkey goalie Jacob Adoni made 12 saves while allowing just two goals as Turkey shut down Austria 7-2. Bijan Firouzan had two goals and an assist in the victory while Klaus Hauer scored both of Austria’s goals.
Canada Wins Third Straight Game
One night after beating the Iroquois Nationals in a thriller, Canada had an easier time on Monday afternoon, beating Japan 20-3 to improve to 3-1 in the Blue Division.
Mark Matthews led the attack with an eight-point game (5g, 3a) while Jeremy Noble had four goals and Curtis Dickson, the hero of last night’s game had three goals and two assists. Geoff Snider won 11-of-15 faceoffs in the game and Dillon Ward and Brennan Donville combined for nine saves in goal.
Yuji Tadahira, Wataru Tsugu, and Andrew Lay all scored for Japan.
In other games, Wales beat Italy 16-7, Slovakia topped France 17-6 and Norway beat Russia 14-7.
Seven players scored multiple goals for Wales in its 16-7 win over Italy, led by Paul Simpson who had three to go along with his four assists. Stephen McDermott added two goals and three assists. Thomas Filbotte and John St. John each had two for Italy.
Slovakia scored the first seven goals of the game on its way to beating France 17-6. Ivan Cernak led the team with three goals and three assists. Kevin Bertrand and Felix DeClercq each scored two for France.
Norway outscored Russia 8-0 in the second quarter on its way to a 14-7 victory. Norway’s Niklas Sparr Johnse won 17-of-22 faceoffs to help them dominate possession and Per Arne Winsnes Kvalvag had seven points (2g, 5a). Aksel Kvaal and Lars Rysst also had three goals each. Dmitri Khamlin and Jacob Richards each scored twice for Russia.
Germany, Israel Advance to Next Round of Playoffs
Germany, the sixth place finisher at the 2010 FIL World Championship in Manchester, England, and Israel, a first-time FIL World Championship participant, both won games on Monday to advance to the next round of the playoffs. Germany and Israel will meet on Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. Mountain time in a game that will be televised on ESPN3.
Germany defeated the Czech Republic 9-5 behind four goals from Hendrik du Bois-Reymond and three goals from Simon Giourmetakis. After Radek Skala scored for the Czech Republic with 13:24 to go in the third quarter to cut Germany’s lead to 5-3, Germany went on a three-goal run with two of them by duBois-Reymond. Pavel Dosly had two goals and two assists for the Czech Republic and Jakub Nosek scored twice. Philipp Maas made 12 saves for Germany and Jakub Drozd made 12 for the Czech Republic.
Israel took nearly 10 minutes to find the back of the net, but then got rolling and beat Ireland 18-9. Lee Coppersmith had five goals and was one of 10 players to score goals for Israel Cole McCormack and Michael Grosz combined to win 22-of-31 faceoffs for Israel. Tom Riley had four goals for Ireland and Tom Burke had two goals and three assists.
First-time Participants China, Thailand Earn First Wins
In a match-up of outstanding goalies, China edged Argentina 9-7 to earn its first-ever FIL victory. China’s Harrison Zhu and Argentina’s Michael Gvozden came into today leading the tournament by a longshot in saves with 59 and 57, respectively. Zhu made 10 and Gvozden made 13 as China edged out Argentina for the win. Tyler Buchan scored five times for China while Nik Hodosy-Brander and Mriano Nakada had two each for Argentina.
Thailand was also a first-time winner, beating Colombia 12-3. Colton McCaffery had two goals and four assists for Thailand and Ben Brown made 10 saves while allowing just two goals in one half of play. Liew Porkulwat added two goals and two assists. Timothy Drumta had a goal and an assist for Colombia.
Belgium was a big winner on Monday, defeating Costa Rica 18-4 behind four goals from Kevin McKeown and three goals and three assists from Brendan Murphy. Diego Spillebeen also won 14-of-20 faceoffs for Belgium. Carson Jones had two goals and an assist for Costa Rica.
Latvia got big games from Eli Lasda (4g,4a), Christopher Zarins (3g, 4a), Arturs Krastins (4g) and Gatis Zeps (1g, 4a) to beat Spain 21-3. Spain goalie Alvaro Couceiro made 15 saves, Fernando Martinez won 19-of-28 faceoffs and Danny de la Casa had two goals.
Scotland Beats Finland 9-6 to Advance
Scotland’s defense played well in a 9-6 victory over Finland that moved Scotland one stage closer to the quarterfinal round of the tournament. Scotland will play the winner of this morning’s Netherlands – New Zealand game tomorrow and the winner of that game will move onto the quarterfinals.
Scotland goalie Ethan Harris made 10 saves and coach John Kenney was pleased with the way his overall defensive unit performed in the game. Offensively, Kyle Buchanan led the way with three goals and one assist, all three of the games coming in consecutive fashion to push Scotland from a 2-1 lead to a 5-1 advantage. Jordan McBride added two goals and two assists.
Nick Ranta led Finland with two goals and an assist and Sami Grasbeck won 12-of-18 faceoffs.
Also in the morning, Poland defeated Hong Kong 14-4. Poland led just 3-2 midway through the second quarter, but then scored seven consecutive goals to pull away. Michael Poch and Colin Jesien each had three goals for Poland and Christian Dzwilews and Kacper Andrzejczak combined to make 12 saves in goal. Hang Wai Wong had a goal and two assists for Hong Kong.
