Eight Divisions Move Closer to Bracket Stage

(COMMERCE CITY, CO) Weather delayed action at the Federation of International Lacrosse World Championship for the second straight day, with the final games of the night beginning around 9:30 p.m. local time. There was plenty of excitement before and after the storms.
Eight of the divisions will wrap up pool play on Sunday and the eight pool play winners will have a chance to move into the bracket to play for the world championship. Pool play in the Blue Division, currently led by the Iroquois Nationals and the United States at 2-0 each, continues through Tuesday. Bracket play for the other divisions begins on Monday.
There are two schedule changes for Sunday. The France – Uganda game will now be played on Field 10 at 2 p.m. and the England – Australia game will be played on Field 8 at 8:30 p.m.

Day 3 Results
Iroquois Nationals 24, Japan 9: For the second straight day the Iroquois Nationals got off to a slow start, but a four-goal run to open the second quarter broke a 4-4 tie and Japan never got closer than three goals the rest of the way. Twenty of the 24 goals scored by the Iroquois were assisted with Miles Thompson registering seven assists and Randy Staats dishing six. Jerome had a team-high four goals. Warren Hill made 11 saves while allowing six goals in the quarters of action for the Nationals. Japan was led by Yuji Tadahira and Ryu Matsushita with two goals each.
United States 16, Australia 7: The United States dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring Australia 5-1 in the final frame, to pull away for the victory. Paul Rabil and David Lawson each had four goals for the U.S. while Greg Gurenlian (10 of 13) and Chris Eck (7 of 10) combined to win 17 of 23 faceoffs. Matt Diver led Australia with three goals.
Canada 23, England 3: Canada picked up its first victory of the tournament beating England in the final game of the night. Canada jumped out to a 13-1 lead at the half and was never threatened. Curtis Dickson (5g, 3a), Adam Jones (5g, 2a) and Mark Matthews (4g, 3a) led the offensive assault for Canada. Adrian Bennett, Colin Clive and Aaron Prosser all had one goal for England.
Sweden 21, Republic of Korea 5: Kevin Powers had a monster game with 13 points (8g, 5a) to lead Sweden to its first victory of the tournament. After Korea’s Eungyoo Ryoo opened the scoring just over a minute into the game, Sweden scored the next eight goals to take command. Sten Jernudd added four goals for Sweden. Korea, which fell to 0-2 in the Orange Division, got three goals from Wonjae Park.
Germany 20, Austria 2: Germany moved to 2-0 in the Red Division with a convincing win over Austria. Simon Giourmetakis led the way with six goals while Chris Mattes won 16-of-17 faceoffs. Mattes has lost two just two faceoffs in Germany’s first two games. Germany goalies Philipp Maas (2) and Florentin Turowski (7) combined for nine saves while limiting Austria to just two goals – one for Klaus Hauer and one for Valentin Bombosch.
Bermuda 14, Uganda 5: Steve Velotti made 11 saves while allowing just four goals in 73 minutes of action to lead Bermuda (1-1) past Uganda (0-2). Douglas Bell had four goals and three assists for Bermuda and Drew Jenkins had a huge game with three goals and 16 groundballs as he won 20-of-23 faceoffs. Patrick Oriana and Kenneth Kasule each had a goal and an assist for Uganda.
Spain 14, Colombia 2: Spained evened its record at 1-1 with a victory over Colombia (0-2). Danny de la Casa (4g, 1a) and Ryan Viadero (3g, 2a) each had five-point days for Spain. Colombia got goals from Cam Scully-Ramirez and Jiovany Rendon.
Norway 12, Netherlands 11 (OT): Norway scored twice in the final 18 seconds of the second four-minute overtime period to pull out a wild victory over the Netherlands. Graham Bergsma had given the Netherlands an 11-10 lead in overtime, but Per-Arne Winsnes Kvalvag tied it with 18 seconds to go and Lars Rysst then tallied the game-winning goal just 10 seconds later. Jesper Norman Hjorth led Norway with four goals and Rysst added three. Bergsma led the Netherlands with five goals and Rick van Niekerk had a strong game with 14 saves. Both teams are now 1-1 in the Green Division.
Ireland 22, France 5: France jumped out to an early 2-1 lead, but then Ireland poured it on with 17 consecutive goals on its way to moving to 2-0 in the Yellow Division. Michael Shea and Tom Riley each had four goals for Ireland and Brian Gillis had four assists to go along with his two goals. Kevin Bertrand led France (0-2) with two goals.
Hong Kong 11, Belgium 9: Hong Kong scored the final four goals of the game to rally pastBelgium in the Red Division and set up a showdown with Germany for the Red Division title tomorrow. Tibor Van den Wildenbergh scored his second goal of the game with 9:52 to play to give Belgium a 9-7 lead, but Matthew Silverio then scored three straight goals over the next six minutes to give Hong Kong a 10-9 lead and Hang Wai Wong iced it on a goal with 2:35 to play. Silverio led Hong Kong with five goals and Jay Wich added three goals and three assists. David Taylor led Belgium with four goals.
Wales 11, Argentina 2: Nine different players scored goals and Wales was stout on defense for the second straight day to improve to 2-0. Wales starting goalie James Richardson made four saves while allowing no goals in three quarters of action. Wales has given up just four goals in its two games. Paul Simpson and David Howie each scored twice in the win and Simpson added three assists. Octavio Bernabo scored both of Argentina’s goals and Michael Gvozden made 13 saves.
Scotland 20, Switzerland 6: Scotland moved to 2-0 in the White Division as Jimmy McBride and Kyle Buchanan each scored five goals while Jordan McBride had a game-high seven points (4g, 3a). Switzerland was led by Luis Zurkirchen with two goals.
New Zealand 16, Russia 5: New Zealand scored eight of the game’s first nine goals to move to 2-0 in the Plum Division. Aaron Graham and John Clayton each had three goals for New Zealand and the team combined to win 19-of-23 faceoffs. Eugene Arkhipov had three goals for Russia.
Latvia 14, Thailand 11: Latvia fired of 65 shots and pulled away late in the third quarter for a win over Thailand and move to 1-1 in the White Division. Christopher Zarins led the offense with four goals and three assists and Arturs Krastins and Gatis Zeps each had three goals. Cameron Chinvarakorn led Thailand with three goals.
Finland 18, Mexico 3: Roope Jokela led six Finnish players with two goals by adding two assists as Finland moved alone atop the Turquoise Division with a 2-0 record. Finland has outscored its first two opponents – Colombia and Mexico – by a combined score of 37-3. Mike Vila led Mexico with two goals.
Poland 9, Turkey 7: Poland went scoreless for the first 24 minutes of the game, falling behind Turkey 3-0, but battled back outscored Turkey 4-2 in the final quarter for the victory. Wojciech Filipek led Poland with four goals and Tyler Rinko had four goals for Turkey and goalie Jacob Adoni made 16 saves.
Italy 18, China 5: Steven Whitford scored five times and Thomas Filbotte had four goals as Italy remained unbeaten in the Green Division. Tyler Buchan and Matthew Bailey each had two goals for China.
Czech Republic 18, Costa Rica 1: Nine different players scored goals as the Czech Republic improved to 2-0 in the Grey Division. Leading the way were Dominik Pesek, Artur Bergman and Pavel Dosly with three goals each. Peter Collins had Costa Rica’s lone tally.
Israel 17, Slovakia 2: Ari Sussman had three goals and six assists as Israel scored the first 16 goals on its way to beating Slovakia. Israel won all 22 faceoffs on the game, with Cole McCormack winning 14 of them. David Washo and Stanislav Purgat scored for Slovakia.
