(United Kingdom) England, Wales and Scotland plan to celebrate a century of women’s international lacrosse. Special events are planned to honor the trail blazers for and special contributors to international women’s lacrosse.
The first ever international match for women was held on the Richmond Athletic Ground, just outside London, in April 1913. In the very first game Scotland beat Wales 11-2. Two days later England took on Scotland at the venue and was victorious 7-3.

Scotland – Centenary Lacrosse Weekend
Lacrosse Scotland decided to mark the centenary of women’s lacrosse by hosting a UK tournament and honoring those who had made an outstanding contribution to lacrosse in Scotland during the last century. The festivities will be held Friday 19 through Sunday 21 April 2013 as Scotland hosts the 2013 Women’s Lacrosse Home Internationals at the University of Edinburgh Playing Fields, Peffermill, Edinburgh.
A Centenary Tea will be served immediately after the last game on Saturday 20th April at about 3.30pm and certificates will be presented to 21 Lacrosse Scotland Hall of Fame inductees, or their relatives. Seven Pioneer inductees have been selected for the Lacrosse Scotland Hall of Fame together with 14 Legend inductees. England – Centenary Lacrosse Lunch
The English Lacrosse Women’s Playing Committee, together with Scotland and Wales are hosting a celebratory Centenary Lacrosse Lunchon April 27th at the Richmond Athletic Club.
Anne, The Princess Royal
The Patron of English Lacrosse, Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, will be attending the 100 year celebratory lunch. It is fitting for her to be a part of this landmark occasion as HRH The Princess Royal has performed the patron role for English Lacrosse for over 20 years. Well known for her equestrian talents; she won two silver medals (1975) and one gold medal (1971) at the European Eventing Championships, and was the first member of the British Royal Family to have competed in the Olympic Games (1976 in Montreal). HRH The Princess Royal will be introduced to guests before addressing the room prior to lunch being served.
In addition to Anne, The Princess Royal, English Lacrosse will also welcome Great Britain Hockey legend Kate Walsh to the luncheon who will also address the attendees. Kate will speak of her successful summer at the London Olympics, ‘that injury’ and what it takes to be an International athlete.

According to Sallie Barker WPC Chair of English Lacrosse, “The English Women’s Playing Committee is delighted to be celebrating, with Wales and Scotland, 100 years of women’s international lacrosse at the venue where the first international match was played in 1913.” She continues, “This is a great landmark for our fantastic game and I look forward to welcoming as many participants as possible to the lunch where we will celebrate our history, relive our victories and toast our future success!”
