Australia and Argentina’s late wins stand out in placement play on day seven at Nissin Foods 2026 World Lacrosse Women’s Championship

Twelve teams completed their penultimate matches on day seven of the Nissin Foods 2026 World Lacrosse Women’s Championship on Thursday in Tokyo, setting up a final day of placement play on Saturday to determine the standings from fifth through 16th place.

Australia and Argentina pulled out the narrowest wins on the day with last-minute stands, while England joined Australia in rebounding from their quarterfinal losses to secure top-six finishes.

Argentina and the Philippines also confirmed top-ten finishes with their wins, an impressive feat for the Philippines in its first-ever women’s championship and a guaranteed increase of at least 16 spots in the final standings for Argentina, which finished in 26th in 2022.

Scotland and Czechia won comfortably to set up a battle for 13th.

Scotland picked up its first win of the championship with a strong response to an early lead from Chinese Taipei.

Scotland advanced to the 13th place game and will meet Czechia on Saturday. Chinese Taipei will face Germany for 15th place.

Zoe Dickson paced Scotland with four goals, while Molly Light and Hannah Whiteley added three points each. Steph Roberts made five saves on seven shots faced.

Czechia won its first game of the championship with a takedown of Germany.

Czechia will face Scotland for 13th place while Germany will play Chinese Taipei for 15th place, with both games on Saturday.

Seven different players notched multi-point outings for Czechia, led by Barbora Jaskova with a goal and three assists. Michaele Jerichova added a hat trick. In goal, Kacka Najemnikova starred with nine saves on 10 shots faced in one of the best goalkeeping lines of the championship, and she was named the player of the match.

Australia outdueled Puerto Rico in a game of runs and ran the clock out on Puerto Rico before it could complete the final momentum swing of the game.

Puerto Rico came back on three separate occasions to erase Australian leads, including an early 5-2 lead, but Australia kept pushing forward. The last push was a fourth quarter hat trick in three minutes from Lauren Tolve to lead 10-7 with six minutes left.

Puerto Rico got within one with 30 seconds left to play, and won the ball with 15 seconds left, but could only get to midfield before time expired.

Australia will play for fifth place on Saturday against England. Puerto Rico will play for seventh against Japan.

Georgia Latch was at her usual best for Australia with three goals and three assists, but Tolve’s star turn came at a crucial time for Australia after scoring three goals in the last four games. Ashtyn Hiron added seven draw controls.

Hannah Lewis scored four for Puerto Rico and Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw added three.

Argentina ran out the clock on Ireland, whose second comeback effort of the game came up just short. Argentina led 7-3 in the second quarter, but Ireland tied the game at 8-8 late in the third.

Argentina scored twice early in the fourth and then hung on, with Ireland cutting it to one with five minutes to play. In the closing seconds Ireland had an attacking possession with a chance to tie, and Riley O’Mara drew what would have been a free position shot, but shot wide, and with the advantage rule, the clock ran out before the free position could be taken.

Argentina will play for ninth place on Saturday against the Philippines while Ireland will play Wales game for 11th place.

Gretta White took over early for Argentina with a first half hat trick and ended with five points. Eva Richter added two goals and Melina Sarlo’s fourth-quarter effort proved to be the game winner.

Grace McHugh and Ava Ryan each notched hat tricks for Ireland, while Ava Connaughton tallied a goal and three assists.

England bounced back from its quarterfinal defeat to handle Japan with an efficient night shooting the ball and a smothering defense.

England converted 10 of 19 shots and allowed Japan just five goals on 16 attempts. Britt Read was instrumental in net with eight saves.

Cece Green posted a hat trick and Jordan Carr stepped up for the England attack with two goals and an assist.

Mayu Fuji scored twice for Japan.

England will face longtime rival Australia for fifth place on Saturday, while Japan will face Puerto Rico for seventh.

The Philippines cruised past Wales in a dominant showing, outshooting Wales 35-10. The Philippines used a balanced attack with eight different players combining for the 12 goals.

Emma Barrows stepped up with two scores and was named the player of the match. Steph Lazo scored twice and recorded four ground balls.

Sophy Coombes-Roberts scored twice for Wales.

The Philippines will battle Argentina for ninth place on Saturday while Wales will face Ireland.
