Johannesburg, South Africa, was today announced as host of the 2026 African Sixes Lacrosse Championships, with the joint men’s and women’s competition set for December 1-4.
The dual championships will be held at St. Stithians College. Full members of World Lacrosse within the Africa Association of Lacrosse are eligible to compete in the ASLC, with teams to be announced in the coming months.
The continental championships, hosted by South Africa Lacrosse, will serve as the qualifiers for the 2027 World Lacrosse Sixes Championships, with the top finisher from the men’s and women’s competitions each advancing.
The 2026 ASLC will also be the initial step in the qualification process for the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 for African teams.
The 2027 Sixes Championships will feature the top 16 men’s and women’s teams in the world and will serve as the primary qualifier for LA28.
In addition to the United States – which automatically qualifies as the Olympic host nation if its men’s and women’s teams participate in the continental championships and WLSC – four men’s and four women’s teams will earn their Olympic berths at the WLSC. The site and dates (expected late 2027) for the sixes championships will be announced in the coming months.
The last remaining Olympic slot for each gender will be determined in early 2028 (expected March/April) at a final qualifying tournament, which will feature the top six men’s and women’s teams not already qualified, based on rankings from the WLSC.
All four Continental Federations have now announced their sixes championships, with the Pan-American Sixes Lacrosse Championships in Canada set first in late September, followed by the Asia-Pacific Sixes Lacrosse Championships in Australia in early October. The European Sixes Lacrosse Championships in Spain will begin in early November.
