Mexico claims second win in a row over New Zealand

Mexico improved to 2-1 at the women’s U20 championship with another brilliant attacking display in a 15-9 win over New Zealand.

Elena Torres was the catalyst again for Mexico’s high-powered attack with four goals and three assist, and Kendall Conrad stepped up with five goals and an assist to earn the player of the match award.

Natali Acosta scored four goals and Lola Aguirre went 8/12 on draw controls.

Both Mexico goalkeepers did their part to preserve with the win, with eight first-half saves from Bella McCullough and five in the second half from Camila Gabrian.

Sienna Neill, Isabelle Vrensen and Dinithi Baumnusinghe each scored three goals for New Zealand.

Mexico’s playoff hopes are still alive with its 2-1 record in Pool C, but it will have to defeat the defending bronze medalist Australia on Monday and get help to advance.

New Zealand has one game remaining in pool play against Scotland on Tuesday.
