Maas Leads Germany to Ninth Place Finish
Germany wrapped up a ninth place finish as goalie Philipp Maas made 11 saves in an 8-6 victory over Ireland. Ireland scored the first two goals of the game, but Germany then ripped off four straight goals and Ireland never regained the lead.
Simon Giourmetakis led Germany with three goals, two of them extra man, and Wolfgang Griessl added two. Chris Mattes also came in late in the game and won four critical faceoffs down the stretch. Brian Gillis had three goals for Ireland and Tom Riley had a goal and an assist.
Israel Finishes Seventh After 15-10 Win Over Japan
Israel trailed Japan 5-4 at the half, but then outscored them 5-0 in the third quarter and added the first two goals of the fourth quarter to key a 15-10 win. Israel, playing in its first FIL World Championship, finished seventh.

Ari Sussman scored three of his game-high five goals during Israel’s seven-goal scoring run and Kyle Bergman added three goals and two assists. Henry Altschuler played nearly three quarters and made nine saves while allowing just three goals.
Waturo Tsugu and Mikisuke Sekine each had three goals for Japan and Keisuke Ando made 15 saves.

Switzerland Digs Out of Early Hole, Beats Netherlands
Switzerland dug out of an early 4-1 hole and defeated the Netherlands 9-6 to finish in 15th place, an eight-slot improvement over their showing at the 2010 FIL World Championship in Manchester, England.
Switzerland’s Tyson Ehinger made seven saves in the first three quarters of action, and Dominik Guntensperg closed it out making four saves while allowing just one goal in the final quarter. Luis Zurkirchen, Joni Schreiber and Juan Schmid all had two goals for Switzerland.
Scott Janssen led the Netherlands with four goals and James van de Veerdonk won 14-of-17 faceoffs.
A moment of silence was observed before the game for the nearly 200 Dutch citizens that died on Malaysia Flight 17 on Thursday.
Wales Finishes Strong with 18-6 Win Over Italy
Paul Simpson had four goals and two assists and Eoin Dunne contributed three goals and two assists as Wales finished 17th with an 18-6 win over Italy. Rhodri Stanford won 12-of-15 faceoffs for Wales and James Richardson and Kyle McAllister combined for 10 saves.
John St. John had a goal and three assists for Italy and he finished the tournament with 17 assists, among the event leaders. Steven Whitford also had two goals and an assist.
Sweden Closes with 8-6 Victory Over New Zealand
After trailing 4-2 after one quarter, Sweden went on a five-goal run that spanned more than 52 minutes, leading them to an 8-6 victory over New Zealand. Sweden earned 11th place while New Zealand’s 12th place finish was its best in four trips to the world championships. Sweden finished 10th in 2010.
Sten Jernudd led Sweden with three goals, including the final two of Sweden’s key scoring run, and Kevin Powers added two goals. Edward Roberts led New Zealand with two goals and John Clayton had a goal and two assists.
Buchan Powers China Over Uganda
Tyler Buchan scored eight goals, giving him a tournament-leading 35, as China knocked off Uganda 14-7 to claim 33rd place. Buchan, who had nine goals in a win over Korea yesterday, scored three times in the first quarter to stake China to an early 5-1 lead it never relinquished.
Matthew Bailey added a goal and three assists for China and Harrison Zhu made 15 saves. Jaffari Makanda led Uganda with five goals.
Korea Pulls Away to Beat Argentina
Korea scored three straight goals in the final five plus minutes to beat Argentina 10-7 and claim 35th place at the FIL World Championship, presented by Trusted Choice. Argentina’s Mariano Nakada tied the game 7-7 midway through the fourth, but then Jae Chun Lee (5:09), Hunyoung Lee (1:04) and Sung Mo Ku (0:29) scored down the stretch for Korea.
Bumsuck You led Korea with four goals Kihun Kim ade 10 saves for the win. Zach Kahn had four goals for Argentina and Michael Gvozden made 12 saves.
Latvia Handles Poland to Earn 19th Position
Christopher Zarins and Eli Lasda each scored four goals and Gints Gutmanis made 13 saves as Latvia pulled away for a 17-7 victory over Poland to finish in 19th place. Latvia led 6-3 and then scored the first three goals of the second half to gain control. Larry Cerais led Poland with three goals and Michael Poch (13-of-16) and Michal Bucki (7-of-10) did most of the work to help Poland win the faceoff battle 20 to 7.
Strong Start Carries Finland Past Czech Republic
Finland held the Czech Republic to just one goal in the first 42 minutes of the game, jumping out to a 6-1 lead and held on for an 11-7 victory to earn 13th place in the world championship.
Jarno Aaltonen had three goals for Finland and Rob Griffith added two goals and two assists. Lauri Uusitalo made three saves while allowing just one goal in the first half and Hayden Johnstone made 10 saves in the second half for Finland. Pavel Dosley led the Czech Republic with two goals and two assists and Jonathan Munk added two goals while winning 15-of-20 faceoffs.
McCaffery Powers Thailand to 12-6 Win Over Spain
Colton McCaffery scored six goals as Thailand completed its first FIL championship with a 4-4 record after beating Spain 12-6 to finish in 29th place.
McCaffery finished the tournament with 30 goals and he scored twice and assisted on another as Thailand opened up a 5-0 lead after the first quarter. Reed Barbe added two goals and two assists and Pongprapat Suriyodom and Ben Brown combined for 13 saves.
Danny de la Casa led Spain with three goals and Fernando Martinez won 14-of-20 faceoffs.
DeClercq, Bertrand Lead France Past Russia
Felix DeClercq and Kevin Bertrand each scored four goals as France defeated Russia 15-7 to capture 31st place. France led 3-2 after one quarter and then broke things open by scoring seven goals in the second quarter. France’s Alex Andrup won 18-of-22 faceoffs. Eugene Arkhipov led Russia with four goals and Jordan Friedman had three.
Taylor Shines as Belgium Nips Austria 7-6
Matt Taylor made 16 saves as Begium edged Austria 7-6 to capture 27th place. The game featured five ties and Julian Cook broke the final tie, scoring the game-winning goal for Belgium with 1:04 left in the game.
Belgium was held off the scoreboard for the first 36 minutes, but still led 2-1 at the half and Gabriel Wagner and Brendan Murphy netting goals in the final 3:02 of the second quarter. Murphy and Diego Spillebeen each had two goals for Belgium and Tibor Van den Wildenberg had a goal and three assists. Klaus Hauer led Austria with three goals.
Norway Shuts Down Slovakia 14-3 for 25th place
Erlend Hoel made nine saves as Norway shut down Slovakia 14-3 to claim 25th place. Norway outshot Slovakia 42-17 and won 15-of-21 faceoffs with Nicklas Sparr Johnse taking most of the draws for Norway.
Jesper Norman Hjorth had four goals for Norway and Lars Rysst added three goals and two assists. Stanislav Mraz and Nathaniel Gaspar combined for 17 saves for Slovakia.
Hong Kong Beats Turkey 10-4 for 21st Place
Hong Kong held Turkey scoreless for the first 25 minutes of the game, jumping out to a 4-0 lead and led comfortably throughout in a 10-4 victory to claim 21st place. Waik Kwan Wong was very solid in goal, making 13 saves in the win, and Van Sternbergh had three goals. Tyler Rinko led Turkey with three goals. Jacob Adoni made 10 saves in the loss and finished the tournament with a 65.6 save percentage.
Hong Kong improved one spot from its 22nd place finish in 2010. Turkey was playing in its first world championship and finished with the second-best placement among the new newcomers to the event, trailing only Israel, which is playing for seventh place today.
Mexico Downs Bermuda for 23rd Place
Joe Vila tallied four goals as Mexico downed Bermuda 12-8 to capture 23rd place in the 2014 FIL World Championship, presented by Trusted Choice. Mexico completed the tournament with a record of 3-4, showing marked improvement from a 29th place finish in its inaugural world championship in 2010.
Mexico led 5-4 at the half and then broke it open in the third quarter, outscoring Bermuda 5-0 in the frame. Bermuda scored three straight in the fourth quarter, two of them by Douglas Bell, to pull within 11-8 with 5:50 remaining, but Vila’s fourth goal of the game 21 seconds left sealed it for Mexico.
Mike Vila added two goals and three assists for Mexico and Axkana Patraca and Kevin Kterndahl each had two goals. James Chiappa led Bermuda with three goals and Bell had the two. Drew Jenkins had a goal and an assist and won 14-of-17 faceoffs. Jenkins finished the tournament winning 69.5 percent (114-of-164) of his faceoffs.
