World Lacrosse Board of Directors Appoints Working Group to Establish Selection Categories, Criteria and Format for Hall of Fame

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO, USA – The World Lacrosse Board of Directors, meeting today via videoconference in regular session, unanimously approved the appointment of a Working Group to investigate and bring forward a series of recommendations to the Board regarding the creation of a Hall of Fame which will honor, celebrate, preserve and share the outstanding accomplishments and contributions of those who have achieved excellence in the sport of lacrosse.

The Board of Directors also approved the appointment of Rick Mercurio as Chair of the Working Group, which will be responsible for presenting a package of recommendations to the Board addressing the following:

Proposed name for the Hall of Fame
Mission and Vision for the Hall of Fame
Categories for induction and recognition
Nominating criteria and process
Selection criteria and process
Frequency of induction
Format for induction

The Hall of Fame Working Group will be comprised of seven members and will reflect diversity and balance in geography, gender and lacrosse experience. Individuals interested in serving on the Hall of Fame Working Group should contact Rick Mercurio directly at rmercurio@worldlacrosse.sport.

“As our international federation continues to grow, we have a responsibility to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of individuals who have helped establish the standard of excellence in our game,” said World Lacrosse President Sue Redfern. “Our future is bright because of our unique and rich history, and it is right that we celebrate the accomplishments of those who have left a lasting and positive imprint on our game, and in so doing, inspire future generations.”

The Board of Directors also approved, in principle, the creation of a Working Group to focus on issues of environmental, social and economic sustainability, with the exact terms of reference and composition of the Working Group to be reviewed and approved by the Board at a later date. In recognition of the importance of sustainability, the Board of Directors approved the creation of the World Lacrosse Sustainability Excellence Awards

to promote, inspire and recognize excellence among World Lacrosse members in this critical area. Full details on the Sustainability Excellence Awards will be shared with the World Lacrosse membership during the organization’s General Assembly later this month.

In addition, the Board of Directors:

Reviewed ongoing preparations for the 2021 World Lacrosse Men’s U20 and Women’s World Championships, and the continued impact of the global pandemic on those preparations;
Received final reports on the organization and delivery of the 2019 World Lacrosse Women’s U19 and Men’s Indoor World Championships;
Reviewed a draft Operating Budget for 2021-2022, which will be presented to the World Lacrosse membership during the 2020 General Assembly
