Six teams claimed wins on the first day of the first-ever World Lacrosse Women’s Championship Division II in Wroclaw on Saturday, highlighted by Mexico’s last-second winner over the host Poland.
Norway, Latvia, Korea, New Zealand and Hong Kong, China all opened their campaigns with a win as the two pools of six teams began their round robin action.

Italy claimed the first-ever win at the Women’s Championship Division II to open the slate on Saturday, with three players each reaching five points in Elise Fawcett, Ainsley James and Sienna Klauss. Norway’s goalkeeper Karita Haugsbø was named the player of the match for making 23 saves.

After a back-and-forth opening 20 minutes, Korea seized control with 12 unanswered goals over the next 40 minutes to end up on the right side of an 11-goal decision. Helen Bae scored three goals and was named the player of the match.

New Zealand closed the second quarter on a 4-0 run, which was enough padding the rest of the way to comfortably see out Spain for an opening day win. Brooke Bolstad keyed the New Zealand attack with two goals and two assists and was named the player of the match.

Hong Kong, China opened the game on a 7-0 run behind a first-half hat trick from Vanessa Yu, and rode a strong defensive performance to an eight goal win over Switzerland.

Mexico had the final say over Poland in a bona fide thriller to close the day one slate. Poland led by two at halftime, and then Mexico led by two with 10 minutes to go. Poland tied the game, and forced a turnover with under a minute to go on Mexico’s would-be final possession, only for Mexico to regain the ball in the dying seconds. Lola Aguirre Moon found the ball in front of goal and calmly dispatched the game-winner.
