Ireland defeated China 19-5 in the seventh place game of the women’s sixes competition at The World Games 2025 in Chengdu.
Ireland claimed its first win of the tournament to end its debut appearance at The World Games on a high note.
“It’s been really great competition at this tournament but I think it was really important for us to finish on the strong note and remember who are representing, the name on the front,” said Ireland goalkeeper Haley Crosson. “We’ve played a lot, so we will retool, retreat, and we have our eyes on big goals. Everyone at this tournament does, everyone across the world does. We’ll take things step by step.”
“If there’s one thing about our team, you always hear us laughing,” added Crosson. “Whether it’s the dining hall or locker room, I could do a three hour bus ride and we’d be laughing the whole time. We are all really proud to be here and proud to represent the isle, and I had such a great time in lacrosse with everyone.”
China finished in eighth place.
Ireland started slow with just two goals in the first quarter, but picked up steam with five goals in the second quarter and seven in the third.
On the day, Ireland outshot China 47-23, forced China into 23 turnovers, and enjoyed a ground balls advantage of 17-4.
Ava Brosnan led the Irish output with four goals and two assists, followed by a five-point outing from Gabby Rosenzweig
Crosson excelled in net, making 13 saves on 18 shots faced.
Becky Yang made 16 saves for China, and Jing Peng registered two goals, the first multi-goal outing for a Chinese attacker at the tournament. Cindy Jia had three points with a goal and two assists.
