England Defeats Israel to Win Their Third Consecutive Women’s European Championship; Wales Wins Bronze Medal Game

July 25, 2019

NETANYA, ISRAEL – Israel came ready to play in front of a rowdy home crowd Thursday evening. England, however, had different plans and held off Israel, 10-7, to win the 2019 European Lacrosse Federation Women’s Lacrosse European Championship. In the process, England claimed its third consecutive title.

“We felt confident in respect to the battle,” said England’s veteran Lucy Lynch.  “We had to work really, really hard. It’s a long tournament. We had to keep composed to win the game.”

England came out firing, going up 3-0 early in the first ten minutes of the game. England scored goals from three different players. Israel responded with back-to-back goals, making it 3-2. Both teams began to exchange goals the rest of the second quarter with England leading, 5-3, at the break.

Beginning the third quarter, England was able to score right away giving them momentum early on, which led to another two goals for England by Megan Whittle. Israel didn’t back down and responded with two goals from Emily Resnick, bringing Israel back to within two at 9-7.

England was able to shut the door completely on Israel after another Whittle goal with less than three minutes left in the game to win.

Lynch added: “I am really pleased how we stuck together as a team (to win our third title). To be honest, I really had to keep my eyes on the prize. It was hard fought.”

Whittle led England with a total of five goals scored in the game. Israel’s leading scorer was Resnick, with five total goals as well.

WALES WIN BRONZE MEDAL

Wales, behind a stand-out offensive game in the second half, defeated Czech Republic to claim the bronze medal.  Wales offensive surge was led by Iona Dryden, Ros Llyod-Rout and Tegan Warren, each of whom tallied three goals.

Czech Republic led at the half 7-5 before Wales was able to swing the momentum with a 3-0 run to take an 8-7 lead mid-way through the 3rdperiod. Czech Republic responded and tied the game at 8-8 before Wales took control of the rest of the match. Wales closed out the game on a 5-0 scoring run.

Czech Republic was lead in scoring by Anna Lottmann and Isabelle Martire with two goals apiece.
