Australia – England
Australia overturned a six-goal deficit to stun England 19-12 in the first quarterfinal of the women’s box championship on Thursday.
England led 8-2 after 26 minutes, but Australia closed the half strong with two goals.
In the third quarter, Australia completely flipped the script and scored six goals in five minutes to lead 10-8.
England finally stopped the run with a goal to make it 11-9, but Australia continued its hot streak and scored five more goals in another seven minutes of action to lead 16-9.
Kate Hooper spearheaded the attacking outburst for Australia with six goals and four assists while Charlotte Whinnen added six goals and two assists including three goals in the run that flipped the game.
Emma Green, Bea Cameron and Eleni Megoran all added four or more points. In the end, Australia outshot England 58-29 including an 18-4 advantage in the pivotal third quarter.
Australia will play in the semifinals on Friday against the United States. England will face Ireland.
United States – Ireland
The United States began its playoff campaign in style with a 30-1 win over Ireland in the second quarterfinal of the day.
The elite ball control and shotmaking were on display from the Americans in the win, and seven players finished with five or more points.
Erin Bakes led all attackers with 11 points on six goals and five assists, and Emily Hawryschuk was right behind her with six goals and three assists. Melissa Sconone racked up six goals and two assists while Taylor VanThof recorded two goals and six assists.
The U.S. outshot the Irish 75-17.
Julia Ruscio scored the lone goal for Ireland and Becky Moloney made 35 saves.
The United States advanced to the semifinals on Friday, when it will face Australia at 2:30 p.m.
Ireland will face England on Friday.
Haudenosaunee – Germany
The Haudenosaunee overcame Germany in a defensive battle in the third quarterfinal of the day, 7-2, to advance to the semifinals.
It took 16 minutes for Haudenosaunee to break the deadlock after a scoreless first quarter, but three goals in the last 10 minutes of the first half gave the Haudenosaunee a four goal lead.
While Germany’s defense was always in position to make things as hard as possible for its opponent, the Haudenosaunee defense gave Germany no space to get off any quality shots. The game was extremely physical on both sides.
Haudenosaunee’s Chelsea Gibson went perfect in net with 26 saves and no goals allowed in three quarters.
Trysten Burns had two goals and an assist to lead the Haudenosaunee attack while Mekwan Tulpin posted two goals.
Marlene Steyer and Sinem Unlu scored for Germany. Romina Erhardt and Kady Glynn combined for 49 saves and a save percentage above 85 percent.
The Haudenosaunee will take on the winner of the Canada in the semifinals while Germany will face the Netherlands in placement play.
Canada – Netherlands
Canada continued its unstoppable momentum at the women’s box championship through the quarterfinal round on Thursday, rolling past the Netherlands 33-2.
In a testament to Canada’s superb two-way play so far throughout its time in Utica, the most notable moment of the game was the Netherlands’ first goal 20 minutes in on the power play, which snapped the scoreless streak Canada had been pitching for 260 minutes.
Five players had seven or more points for Canada. Erica Evans led all attackers with eight goals and three assists, while Shonly Wallace and Megan Kinna both posted nine-point outings.
Canada outshot the Netherlands on the evening 99-7.
In the semifinals, Canada will take on the Haudenosaunee in a rivalry matchup on Friday evening.
The Netherlands move into placement play against Germany on Friday afternoon.
