Ireland Escape Highlights Day Two at WILC

(ONONDAGA NATION) Ireland improved to 2-0 in the Green Division with a wild last-second win to highlight the second day of action at the FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championship. Ireland’s Brian Gillis scored with just two seconds remaining to foil a wild Serbia comeback in Ireland’s 11-10 victory.
Brothers Ilija Gajic and Aleksandar Gajic almost pulled off a stunning comeback for Serbia before Gillis’ heroics let Ireland escape. Trailing 10-6 with under 10 minutes to play, Ilija Gajic scored back-to-back goals to cut it to 10-8 with just under five minutes to play and then assisted his brother on a pair of goals in the final minutes to tie the game. Aleksandar’s last goal came with just seven seconds remaining, but just five seconds later, Gillis delivered the game winner.
Gillis and former Syracuse star Stephen Keough each had two goals and an assist for Ireland. Ilija Gajic, a former Denver star and No. 2 overall pick in the 2009 NLL draft, had four goals and three assists for Serbia with his brother Alexsandar also netting four goals.

Germany 10, Israel 9
Germany was outshot 57-25 and lost 18 of 20 face-offs against Israel, but won the game 10-9 as Tyler Glebe made 41 saves. Israel’s Kyle Bergman scored back-to-back goals to give Israel an 8-7 lead with under 10 minutes to play, but Germany answered with three goals in a span of just 1:16 to regain control. Wolfgang Grießl had two of the goals and finished the game with five goals while Jamie Plunkett added four. Bergman, Jacob Silberlicht and Zachary Pall all had two goals for Israel.

Czech Republic 9, England 7
The Czech Republic also went down to the wire before outscoring England 4-1 in the final quarter to pull away for a 9-7 victory. Dominik Pešek scored his sixth goal of the game with 3:21 left in the game to break a 7-7 tie and give the Czech Republic the lead, and Radek Skála iced the game on a goal with 58 seconds remaining. Cole Shafer led England’s offense with two goals and two assists.

Australia 21, Turkey 17
Australia improved to 2-0 in the Red Division, outscoring Turkey 21-17 in a shootout. Matthew Taylor led Australia’s onslaught with six goals and three assists and Jesse Whinnen added five goasl and two assists. Taylor had three goals during a 6-0 Australia spurt to open the game. Anthony Terranova scored eight times for Turkey, which was outshot 69-44, and also added three assists for an 11-point day.

Finland 18, Switzerland 5
In the first game of the day on Saturday, Finland dominated Switzerland from start to finish in an 18-5 win. Roope Jokela had four goals and three assists and Jarno Aaltonen had two goals and five assists for Finland. Aaltonen assisted on the first four goals of the game for Finland. Martin Beer led Switzerland with a pair of goals.

Sunday’s schedule features a showdown between the two gold medal favorites, three-time defending champion Canada and the host Iroquois Nationals. The United States, which lost to the Iroquois 13-9 on Friday night in its opener, will battle the Czech Republic.
