U.S. Virgin Islands, Scotland and China score dramatic wins on day three at World Lacrosse Box Championships

Day three of the 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championships featured another 16 games of pool play, with 12 games in the men’s championship and four games in the women’s championship, as the playoff picture began to take shape across the board.

A trio of men’s teams bagged dramatic wins: U.S. Virgin Islands started the day with an overtime win vs. Austria; Scotland pulled off a late comeback against Jamaica, and China staged an even later comeback against Poland with a game-winning goal coming in the final seconds.

The Haudenosaunee nearly upended rivals Canada with a nine-goal comeback to tie the game in the fourth quarter, but the defending gold medalist Canada held on for the win.

The United States and Germany stayed undefeated in the women’s box championship while Australia and the Haudenosaunee bounced back for big wins.

Quotables

Hong Kong, China head coach Bob Snider on goalkeeper Brandon Lui, who began playing lacrosse in December:
It’s been pretty phenomenal. He’s just been rock solid for his last two games.
Haudenosaunee head coach Roger Chrysler on how his team erased a nine-goal deficit against rival Canada:
It helps that in a comeback like this, it took each and every one of the guys on that bench to not give up on their brother. We knew we had to stand up in front of them, and that’s where that bond we do have comes out.
Israel head coach Chad Culp on captain Iakov Silberlicht, who is from Utica:
He’s what Israel Lacrosse wants to be — hardworking and passionate.
Hungary’s John Szamboky on playing with his brother Ryan:
Being teammates means absolutely everything. I grew up training with him and playing with him in the yard every day … It’s an awesome thing to be a part of. I know our grandparents are proud of us.
Hong Kong coach Wilson Wong on meeting Sally Tang, Hong Kong women’s captain, for the first time at a practice:
At that time, I didn’t know who she was. The two teams were mixed so we were playing against one another. Two times at that practice I hit her down, so I guess we had some kind of destiny.
Sally Tang on the role reversal with her now-fiancé:
I watched him play box at the 2019 world championship, and now it’s reversed and so amazing.
