PALA Sixes Cup features a series of thrillers on day one

The Pan American Lacrosse Association Sixes Cup in Kingston, Jamaica, kicked off on Thursday, November 9, with all 15 teams in action across the men’s and women’s competition.

Five of the seven men’s games finished with a scoreline of between two goals, including two dramatic wins for the Jamaica Gold team and a thrilling 17-16 win for Mexico over Puerto Rico.

The Haudenosaunee women impressed on the day with two decisive wins, while Argentina stunned Mexico with a 16-15 victory.

Women’s Competition

Puerto Rico started the day with a 16-8 win over Mexico. Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw got off to a hot start with six goals and Cecelia Vergara chipped in with three goals.

Jamaica opened up its tournament with a resounding 16-4 win over the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Haudenosaunee got off to a running start with a 22-7 win over Peru. Lois Garlow and Avery Doran both notched four goals in a balanced effort.

Argentina stunned Mexico in one of the biggest headlines of the day, a 16-15 victory. Gretta White turned in a frontrunner for performance of the tournament with eight goals in the win. Daniela Eppler had six goals for Mexico, bringing her total on the day to 11.

Peru claimed a win in its first match, knocking off a previously 1-0 Jamaica squad 12-8 in a defensive battle. Morgan Ortega shouldered the offensive burden with five goals and Cassandra Kitchen added three.

The Haudenosaunee closed out the day with a statement win over the U.S. Virgin Islands, 28-0. Garlow and Doran both tallied six goals to finish their days with 10 goals apiece.

Men’s Competition

Brazil opened the competition with an impressive 16-15 win in its first ever international contest over the Jamaica Green squad. Tyler Yarnall led the scoring with four goals and Trevor Hall added three. Antwone Williams led the scoring for his Jamaica team.

Panama got off to a winning start with a 17-15 win over the Dominican Republic, behind an impressive six-goal outing from Gabe Telleria and three goals from Jon Morgan. Henry Chapman had five goals in defeat for the Dominican Republic.

Jamaica Gold edged the U.S. Virgin Islands in a 19-18 thriller, with four goals from AJ Knox and three from Mark Darden. The U.S. Virgin Islands turned in a valiant effort with six goals from Gavin Jones and five from Miller Barbour.

Mexico defeated Puerto Rico, 17-16, in overtime, with the game winner coming from Josh Sanchez on his sixth goal. Joshua Balarcel and Matthew Chlastawa added three goals each in a back-and-forth affair that saw Puerto Rico tie the game in regulation with a goal from Chlastawa with 38 seconds left to play.

Panama consolidated its work from earlier in the day with a 25-15 win over the Jamaica Green squad to improve to 2-0. Daniel Sussingham had six goals and Telleria added another four. Williams added another three goals for Jamaica.

The Dominican Republic bounced back from its loss in the morning to stifle Brazil in a 14-7 win. James Green led the way with three goals while Brazil had three goals from Nick Norris and Yarnall.

Jamaica’s Gold squad improved to 2-0 with another hard-fought win, this time a 16-15 nail-biter against a Mexico team that had already won earlier in the day. Four different players scored three goals for Jamaica: Isaac Newland, Josh McLaughlin, Elias McLaughlin and Tony Diallo.
