The 2024 EuroLax Sixes Cup – Portugal concluded over the weekend with Great Britain capturing the gold medal in both the men’s and women’s competitions.
In the men’s competition, Great Britain bested the Hamburg Warriors from Germany in the final, while Switzerland edged Turkey in the bronze medal game.
In the women’s competition, Great Britain downed Germany, while the Netherlands earned the bronze medal over Ireland.
Ben Page-Laycock led the Great Britain men’s team with five goals in the final, followed by Will Prescott with four. Page-Laycock scored 14 goals in the knockout rounds of the tournament.
Hamburg was powered by Felix Kins, who has represented Germany in multiple World Lacrosse championships. Kins scored a hat trick in the final and scored twice in a 14-11 quarterfinal win over an impressive Brazil side. Switzerland’s best goal-scorer in the knockout rounds was Roger Ernst, with 11 goals in three games.
The remaining quarterfinalists in the men’s field were Brazil, Germany, Netherlands and Portugal.
Great Britain’s women’s team showcased its balanced and explosive attack again, with five goals each from Olivia Wimpenny and Emma Savage in the gold medal game. Savage had four goals in the semifinal and Sophy Coombes-Roberts added four to go with her four-goal outing in the quarterfinals.
Larissa Roth tallied three goals to help Germany past the Netherlands in a narrow 14-11 win in a semifinal, and Laura Koschorek contributed six goals in the first two playoff rounds for Germany en route to the silver medal.
The Netherlands’ bronze medal run was led by Melle van Dilgt, Sarah Sweerts and Janneke Bokkes, who each contributed multiple hat tricks in the playoff rounds.
In addition to the four semifinalists, Spain, Scotland, Switzerland and a Global United team advanced to the quarterfinals.
