Women’s Box Championship Day Three Recap

Australia – Ireland

Australia rebounded in Pool B to defeat Ireland 20-4 and collect its first win of the women’s box championship on day three.

Ireland was previously 1-1, and Australia leapfrogged the Irish in the standings with a win.

Australia dominated from the opening draw and finished the first half with an unblemished 13-0 scoreline.

In the end, Charlotte Whinnen led the team with four goals and five assists. Kate Hooper was outstanding with two goals and six assists as well. Tegan Brown, Abbie Burgess-Brice and Eleni Megoran each added four or more points.

Natalie Miller made 23 saves on 27 shots faced for Australia.

Julia Ruscio tallied three points for Ireland and goalkeepers Alice Loughran and Becky Moloney combined for 40 saves.

Germany – Finland

Germany improved to 2-0 in Pool B of the women’s box championship with a comprehensive 14-3 win over Finland.

Finland scored two goals in the second quarter to cut the scoreline to 3-2, but it was all Germany from there.

After a 5-2 scoreline at halftime, Germany put three more in the net in the third quarter and then ran away with the game with a 7-1 line in the final frame.

Star forward Tessa Helf notched seven goals for Germany. Theresa Geissinger and Kim Dressendorfer added three-point outings.

Germany’s defense allowed Finland to just 16 shots throughout the game.

Milly Lofgren made 59 saves at an 81% clip for Finland. Olivia Downey scored twice.

Hong Kong, China – United States

The United States secured its third win in three days at the women’s box championship, defeating Hong Kong, China 28-2.

13 different players filled up the scoresheet for the United States in a balanced attacking effort and 17 had at least one point.

Molly Garrett led the offense with a team-high seven points on four goals and three assists while Charlotte North led the U.S. with six goals. Ally Kennedy and Melissa Sconone each registered hat tracks while Erin Bakes (2g) and Courtney Taylor matched Garrett’s team-high three assists.

Taylor Moreno played the first 30 minutes in goal for the U.S. and made four saves while allowing just one goal. Madison Doucette closed out the victory, by allowing just one goal in the second half while making three saves.

Sumyeut Cheng and Cherry Hon scored Hong Kong’s goals and Claudia Chan made 59 saves (41 in the first half). Sum Tang also had seven saves for Hong Kong.

Following three games in three days, the U.S. will have an off day on Monday before completing pool play against England on Tuesday at 1 pm.

England – Haudenosaunee

The Haudenosaunee bounced back with a well-rounded effort to down England 15-6 for their first win at the women’s box championship.

England battled to a two goal deficit at halftime at 7-5 and 8-6 two minutes into the second half, but the Haudenosaunee pulled away with the last seven goals of the game.

Nine different players scored for the Haudenosaunee and goalkeeper Chelsea Gibson made 32 saves at an 84% rate. The Haudenosaunee outshot England by 14.

Ava Gabriel scored five to lead the attack and Ferrah Blackbird added a goal and three assists.

Laura Beaman had three assists and Alex Drewe had three goals for England. Lucy Mayers made 37 saves.
