Austria – U.S. Virgin Islands
The U.S. Virgin Islands overcame Austria in a 19-18 overtime thriller to collect its first win at the championship.
The U.S. Virgin Islands is appearing in its first World Lacrosse championship of any kind, and its first ever win was a rollercoaster contest.
Austria led 10-6 after five goals from Josh Dawick, but the USVI entered halftime with a more manageable 11-9 deficit.
Austria kept USVI at a two to three goal margin throughout the third quarter and into the fourth, until the USVI finally made its run.
Down three with nine minutes to play, the USVI ripped off a four-goal run, tying the game with four minutes left and taking the lead with 28 seconds to play on a goal from Dante Poli.
Not to be outdone, Adrian Balasch tied the game back up at 18-18 with six seconds to play.
It took nearly three minutes of pulsating action in overtime to find the golden goal, but it was Nick McEvoy for the USVI who scored the momentous winner.
McEvoy finished with five goals, and Poli had seven for the USVI, followed by Gavin Jones with four.
Dawick finished with 10 goals and three assists in a Herculean performance for Austria in defeat. Goalkeeper Stephan Lorenz made 47 saves.
The result throws Pool E into chaos with Netherlands at 2-0, Austria and USVI at 1-1, and Italy at 0-2. The USVI will take on Italy in a thrilling contest while Austria’s hopes hinge on earning a result against the Netherlands.
Finland – Greece
Finland improved to 2-0 with a 17-9 win over Greece in Pool B action in the second game of day three.
Finland was ruthless on power plays early, scoring three goals in a row to lead 6-2, and three more in the second quarter as part of a personal 4-0 run for Brett Kujala to lead 10-3 at halftime.
Greece cut the deficit to five in the third quarter, but Kujala and Robert Raittila helped Finland end the game as comfortable winners.
Kujala finished with nine goals and an assist, and Raittila added three goals and an assist.
Jarno Aaltonen supplied five assists as well.
Evan Constantopoulos made 37 saves for Greece. Demetre Crews scored four for his second straight game with three or more.
Finland will face Japan in its pool finale on Monday in a highly-anticipated contest.
Switzerland – Japan
Japan rolled to its second win in a row to start its first ever campaign at a men’s box championship with a 18-9 victory over Switzerland.
Japan led 4-1 after the first quarter and 9-4 at halftime en route to another solid win.
Yuya Okumura spearheaded the Japan attack with four goals and four assists, as Hiroki Kanaya did his part with three goals and five assists. Russel Bollinger rounded out the high-powered trio for the second straight game with five goals and an assist.
Soya Tokumasu made 33 saves for Japan and Sven Baeriswyl made 53 saves for Switzerland.
Japan faces Finland on Monday for the top spot in Pool B.
Slovakia – Hungary
Slovakia picked up its first win of the men’s box championship in Pool F with a hard fought 15-12 battle over Hungary.
Slovakia’s four-goal run in the first half helped the team jump to a 11-7 lead at halftime.
Hungary kept answering Slovakia with goals to stay within touching distance, but never closed the gap to more than three. Samuel Postma slammed the door with four minutes to go to make it a four goal lead before Slovakia saw out the win.
Postma finished with four goals and two assists to lead the team, and Noah Hoselton added two goals and three assists. Alec Simons and Denis Englis chipped in four points apiece.
Adam Branislav was instrumental in net for Slovakia as well with 42 saves.
Nathan Twisk totaled three goals and six assists for Hungary while Peter Gudmundsen scored four goals and added three assists.
Slovakia and Puerto Rico meet on Monday in a crucial matchup for playoff seeding in Pool F.
England – United States
The United States consolidated its opening night win with a 23-3 victory over England to improve to 2-0 in Pool A.
England scored two early goals, but the United States took over with a nine-goal run in 16 minutes of action powered by Jack Hannah.
It was smooth sailing the rest of the way for the U.S. and Hannah finished with six goals.
Joe Resetarits’ elite playmaking was on display again with one goal and six assists, while four other players recorded four or more points.
Drew Hutchinson finished with a 90% save percentage as well for the United States.
Goalkeepers Cam MacLeod and Jacob Brindle combined for 64 saves for England. Corey Small recorded three points.
Italy – Netherlands
The Netherlands held off a stiff challenge from Italy to win 20-16 and improve to 2-0 in Pool E.
The win helps the Netherlands in its bid for a playoff spot and drops Italy to 0-2.
The two teams were deadlocked throughout 20 minutes, but the Dutch pulled ahead with a three-goal run to lead 11-8 at halftime.
Another three-goal outburst, all on the power play, helped the Netherlands stretch the lead in a hurry in the third quarter to 15-10.
The Netherlands ultimately extended the lead to seven before a Italy late run and maintained the perfect start in the bid for another top-ten Dutch finish.
Logan Schmidt lit up the scoreboard with eight goals and an assist while Joshua Toguri was the principal provider with two goals and six assists.
Graham Bergsma added seven points and Richard Haan recorded five.
Lucas Dudemaine starred for Italy with eight points and Joey Lucchesi was behind him with six points. Samuel Crispo made 56 saves.
While Italy is 0-2, the team is not out of playoff contention yet with a matchup remaining against USVI. The Netherlands face Austria as well on the final day of pool play.
Israel – Belgium
Israel stayed hot with a dominant 25-3 win over Belgium to improve to 2-0 at the top of Pool B.
Israel has put up over 50 goals in two games and took care of Belgium early with 16 goals in the first half.
Six players posted five or more points for Israel, led by Jean-Luc Chetner, who erupted for four goals and nine assists.
Brenden Lundy added seven assists and Parker Pipher led all goalscorers with five goals.
Kyle Baker scored twice for Belgium. Branko van den Wildenbergh made 38 saves.
Israel wraps up pool play on Monday against Hong Kong, China while Belgium takes on Mexico.
Canada – Haudenosaunee
Canada withstood a late comeback effort from the Haudenosaunee to win 11-10 in another thrilling edition of the rivalry between the two most successful teams in the men’s box championship.
Canada led 9-0 after 20 minutes, but the Haudenosaunee slowly worked their way back into the game to tie it at 10-10 just 20 seconds in the fourth quarter.
The crowd on hand at the Adirondack Bank Center was treated to a nerve-wracking fourth quarter after Tanner Cook gave Canada the lead just over a minute into the frame.
The score remained 11-10 for over 12 minutes, but the Haudenosaunee could not get the crucial equalizer. Mitch de Snoo benefitted from a loose ball in the final two minutes that he turned into a solo breakaway effort to push the lead to two before an empty net finisher in the last minute.
Canada preserved its undefeated streak at the men’s box championship and improved to 2-0 in Pool A.
Jeff Teat and Wesley Berg had their fingerprints on the win for Canada with seven assists for Teat and four for Berg. Josh Byrne also added three assists, while Ryan Smith led the goal scorers with three.
Dillon Ward came up big for Canada in net with 36 saves, including seven in the fourth quarter.
The Haudenosaunee found attacking answers from Thomas Hoggarth and Larson Sunday with four points to support Randy Staats, who recorded two goals and three assists.
Both teams have a day off before returning to action at the Mary C. Winder Community Center on Tuesday.
Scotland – Jamaica
Scotland pulled out a late victory over Jamaica in an enthralling battle in Pool D for its second win in Utica.
The two teams traded goals throughout the first half with neither going more than a goal in front. Jamaica led 7-6 at the break thanks to a last second effort from Marcus Minichello.
But the seesaw continued until Jamaica went on a three goal run that yielded 12-10 lead with just under 10 minutes to play.
Scotland had the extra gear on the day, clawing back within one and then surviving for almost seven minutes until Thom Gilbrook scored the equalizer. With the game tied in the final minute, Jorel Doherty delivered the go-ahead goal.
Jamaica had one final possession, but Scotland forced a turnover and added one more in the final seconds.
Luke Laskiewicz took on the attacking workload for Scotland, finishing with three goals and four assists, including the helper on the game-tying goal.
Jake Gilmour added four points and Gilbrook recorded three goals.
Josh Gamble walled off his net for Scotland, making 41 saves across three quarters at an 85% clip, with 13 saves in the final frame.
Isaac Newland scored five goals for Jamaica and Damon Edwards had two goals and three assists.
At 2-0, Scotland will take on the Czech Republic for a chance to top Pool C on Monday. Jamaica will face Chinese Taipei.
Czechia – Chinese Taipei
Czechia ran away with its second win in Utica, topping Chinese Taipei 24-4 to stay atop Pool D.
The Czechs deep attacking cast was firing from the opening draw and led 8-0 by the end of the first quarter.
By the end, four players recorded seven or more points, led by Lukas Kucera’s five goals and six assists. Jiri Loskot, Pavel Srch, and Tomas Prochazka all recorded seven points.
Josef Slavik made 27 saves with a 87% save percentage.
Dennis Jack Burns scored a hat trick for Chinese Taipei, which closes pool play against Jamaica on Monday.
Czechia will face Scotland.
China – Poland
China stunned Poland with a winner in the dying seconds of the game to complete a comeback for a dramatic 11-10 win.
China had a 6-3 lead through the middle of the second quarter, but Poland responded with six goals in a row on a run that carried into the fourth quarter.
Poland went up 10-7 with just over 12 minutes to play, but China staged an improbable four-goal comeback in the final 10 minutes with three goals from Ben Stewart.
China trailed by one for eight minutes after Stewart’s second goal in the quarter, but Tengyu Xu saved the dramatic equalizer with 45 seconds left to play on assists from Chris Dong and Stewart.
With the final possession of regulation, Stewart called his own number and pulled off a dazzling solo run past three Poland defenders to net the dagger with one second remaining.
Stewart finished his outstanding game with seven goals and an assist. Tengyu Xu and Taihang Yan each had three points while goalkeeper Ben Thibault made 37 saves.
Chris Crapanzano had five goals for Poland while Preston Stewart registered five points as well with a goal and four assists.
The win was China’s first ever at a men’s box championship, putting the team in position on the final day to push for a playoff spot. China will grapple with Germany while Poland will take on Ireland.
Hong Kong, China – Mexico
Hong Kong stayed undefeated in Utica with a 23-7 takedown of Mexico in Pool B.
Hong Kong improved to 2-0 and stayed steady throughout the contest, never letting the lead get closer than three after the first 20 minutes.
Corbyn Tao finished with a mammoth 10-goal effort for Hong Kong. Jalen Chaster added five goals and five assists.
Carter Li tallied seven points and Liam Ferris added four. Brandon Liu recorded 29 saves on an 81% clip for Hong Kong.
Joshua Sanchez led Mexico with five points and Derek Zacatenco had four.
Hong Kong faces off against Israel for the top spot in Pool B in Monday, while Mexico faces Belgium.
