Ireland posted another exceptional defensive effort to corral China, 13-1, for its second win at the 2025 World Lacrosse Men’s U20 Championship in Korea on Sunday.
Through two games, Ireland has posted the best defensive output in the championship, allowing just one goal in 120 minutes of action after shutting out Israel on day one. Ireland allowed just nine shots to China and only five on goal. Ireland induced 37 Chinese turnovers.
Ireland improved to 2-0 and is tied with Mexico atop Pool D, with both teams guaranteeing themselves a spot in the play-in round.
Offensively for Ireland, Chris Sweeney scored five points while Boomer Staunton had another productive game with two goals and two assists.
China’s goalkeeper Xu Zhuoran made nine saves. Walter Zhao was also effective on face-offs, winning 70% of his attempts.
Ireland and Mexico will battle for the top spot in the pool, an important outcome for play-in seeding, on Monday evening. China will wrap pool play on Tuesday against Israel.
