World Lacrosse today announced the extension of its media rights agreement with ESPN for the upcoming 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championships, which runs from September 20-29 in Utica, New York. The agreement brings the WL Box Championships to ESPN platforms for the first time.
As part of the partnership, ESPN platforms will present 26 key games from the dual men’s and women’s championships in the United States, including the gold medal doubleheader on ESPN2. Two additional games will be live in the U.S. on ESPNU, with 22 streaming on ESPN+.
In Canada, the same 26 games will be available on TSN platforms. Additionally, ESPN will extend coverage to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The historic 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championships will feature the first-ever women’s box lacrosse world championship alongside the men’s championship that has been contested since 2003. In total, 133 games will be played across the two championships, with the remaining 107 matches streaming on WL TV, World Lacrosse’s new direct-to-consumer streaming platform. WL TV will also carry the 26 ESPN games for all global markets outside of the U.S. and Canada.
World Lacrosse CEO Jim Scherr said: “We are excited to continue our collaboration with ESPN, a global leader in sports media. This agreement elevates the profile of our sport, and will bring the excitement and intensity of box lacrosse to new audiences. The 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championships promises to be a landmark event, and with our comprehensive coverage, fans will have an unparalleled opportunity to engage with lacrosse on the world stage.”
The 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championships will feature 28 men’s and 10 women’s national teams from around the world. The top four ranked men’s teams (Canada, Haudenosaunee, United States and England) will comprise Pool A, with the remaining 24 teams snake-seeded among six additional men’s pools. The 10 women’s teams are split equally into two pools of five.
