Ireland advanced out of the first play-in game at the women’s box championship on Wednesday with a 12-7 victory over Hong Kong.
Ireland will take on the United States in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
After a back and fourth first 20 minutes, Ireland jumped out to a 7-3 lead with a four goal run in the second quarter.
Hong Kong closed the half strong to cut the deficit to 8-6. But Ireland’s defense stepped in the second half, allowing just one Hong Kong goal in the final 30 minutes. Ireland’s attack did enough for Ireland to win by five.
Gillian Smith had one of the games of the championship with four goals and four assists. Haley Price added three goals and an assist while Julia Ruscio recorded a hat trick.
Hong Kong will be back in action on Saturday in placement play.
Netherlands – Finland
The Netherlands picked up its second win in Utica with a 23-3 victory over Finland in the women’s play-in round on Wednesday.
The Netherlands advanced to the quarterfinals, and will face Canada on Thursday.
The Dutch rolled from start to finish in the knockout game, outshooting Finland 84-20.
Delaney Keen led all players with five goals and four assists.
Ryley Black finished with seven goals and one assists and Bellamie Persad totaled one goal and seven assists.
Kimberly Vuurboom added four goals and three assists.
Darya Saed made 17 saves for the Netherlands, while Heli Vihervaara made 61 saves for Finland.
