Finland – Canada
Canada claimed the first win of the first-ever World Lacrosse Women’s Box Championship over Finland on day one of action in Utica.
Canada recorded an impressive 31-0 statement in its opening match in Pool B.
Katy de Snoo led the dominant attacking showing with six goals and an assist.
Harlowe Steele added seven points while Megan Kinna and Ashley Bull each added six points.
Canada only allowed six shots on goal the entire game.
Ireland – Germany
Germany prevailed over Ireland, 14-13, in a dramatic comeback and finish in Pool B action. Ireland led 8-3 in the first half with an energized start, but Germany responded to tie the game at 8-8 in the closing minutes of the third quarter.
Ireland made it 11-9 to start the final frame, but Germany found a four-goal run in the final nine minutes of action to lead by two. After an Ireland goal to cut the deficit to one in the final two minutes, Germany added one more to wrap up a hard-fought opener by both teams.
Captain Toni Garbe was outstanding for Germany with three goals and three assists. Marlene Steyer scored the goal to give Germany its first lead of the fourth quarter, 50 minutes of game action after its last lead in the contest.
Kady Glynn made 25 saves for Germany.
Julia Ruscio scored six goals and added an assist for Ireland in a valiant effort. Gillian Smith added four points and Briar Slatter and Haley Price both recorded three points. Goalkeeper Becky Maloney made 32 saves.
England – Hong Kong, China
England opened its Pool A campaign at the women’s box championship with a measured 15-9 win over Hong Kong, China.
England came flying out of the gates with a nine-goal run in ten minutes to lead 9-1 in the first quarter. England finished the first half with a 22-8 shots advantage.
From there, Hong Kong battled back to 10-6, but England saw out the rest of the game comfortably to the final 14-9 scoreline.
Alex Drewe tallied six goals and an assist while Lucy Ford provided six assists to spark England’s production. Rosie Bathurst added two goals and four assists.
Tabitha Podger and Lucy Mayers split time in goal for England and Mayers made nine saves in the fourth quarter.
Sally Tang led Hong Kong with three goals and two assists, while Joyce Tong added four assists.
Sum Tang made 12 saves in the second half.
Netherlands – United States
The United States opened its campaign at the women’s box championships with a resounding 32-3 win over the Netherlands.
Fourteen different players appeared on the scoresheet for the United States, with nine players recording two or more goals.
Melissa Sconone led the attack with eight points on five goals and three assists, while Erin Bakes added four goals and three assists.
The star-studded trio of Ally Kennedy, Charlotte North and and Sammy Swart each contributed three goals.
The United States enjoyed a 64-16 shots advantage in the game.
Ryley Black scored twice for the Netherlands. Kim Hahn and Darya Saed combined for 32 saves.
