Wales cap day three with late surge against Chinese Taipei

Needing to bounce back in Pool B, Wales pulled away from Chinese Taipei in the closing stages to secure an 18-9 win at the women’s U20 championship at Shek Kip Mai Sports Park.

The two teams went back and forth for 40 minutes, with Wales taking the largest lead at 7-4, and Chinese Taipei rallying in the third quarter behind Tabitha Goon and Annika Wray to the game at 8-8.

But Wales dipped into its reserve tank and pulled out a nine-goal barrage in just under 12 minutes of play to claim the win. Wales outshot Chinese Taipei 10-1 in the final quarter.

Phoebe Hurt scored a hat trick by herself in the deciding sequence, and finished with seven goals on the day and the player of the match award.

Kaitlin Miller was instrumental to the win on draws, with seven out of nine claimed.

Wray finished with four goals for Chinese Taipei and Goon scored three. Jen-Ni Hsia made seven saves.

Wales kept its playoff hopes alive with the win and a 1-1 record, and have two games remaining against Korea on Sunday and the Haudenosaunee on Tuesday.

Chinese Taipei are also 1-1, and face Canada on Sunday and then the Haudenosaunee on Monday.
