Haudenosaunee – England
The Haudenosaunee turned it on the second half to power past England for a 14-5 win in the bronze medal match in the men’s box championship on Saturday evening.
“Last night was hard for everyone, top to bottom in the Haudenosaunee family,” said head coach Roger Chrysler. “We can control what we can control, and today we had to get bronze. It shows we belong, and the other countries know that and have really supported us this week. It was a very happy atmosphere at the end of the game”
The Haudenosaunee have now collected a medal in all six editions of the championship, dating back to 2003. The Haudenosaunee fell to the United States in the semifinals on Friday, but bounced back on short notice to win on Saturday.
“Our play is for our community and for giving them a voice,” said head coach Roger Chrysler. “Today was just about reminding the guys about that feeling and working through our emotions. Emotions are who we are, we’re flesh, and we’re humans.”
After leading 4-2 at halftime, the Haudenosaunee outscored England 6-1 in the third quarter and tacked on four more goals in the final frame for the win.
Six players scored multiple goals for the Haudenosaunee, led by five-point efforts from Randy Staats, Travis Longboat and Tehoka Nanticoke.
Lyle Thompson also scored a pair of highlight reel efforts.
Warren Hill was outstanding in net with 35 saves on 40 shots faced.
Cam MacLeod made 56 saves in defeat for England. Corey Small led the attack with three points.
England claimed fourth place, matching its highest finish in the event in 2019 and 2007.
Italy – China
After finishing the first half with an 11-3 lead, Italy withstood a valiant comeback effort by China to hold on for a 14-12 placement victory.
Italy’s Lucas Dudemaine continued his fantastic play in Utica, netting seven goals to go with three assists. His final goal was the game’s last and clinched the win for Italy after China had cut the lead to one.
Ben Stewart (6 goals, 2 assists) and Chris Dong (2 goals, 5 assists) were key players for China. The two players combined for three goals during an 8-0 run by China, spanning over 20 minutes.
Samuel Crispo saved 39 shots for Italy, while China’s Ben Thibault saved 38.
Each team committed six penalties.
Italy has won three games in a row in the placement bracket towards 13th place and will play the U.S. Virgin Islands on Sunday morning.
China will take on Slovakia for 15th place on Sunday.
Slovakia – U.S. Virgin Islands
The U.S. Virgin Islands relied on seven unanswered second-half goals to pull away from Slovakia in a 20-10 win.
A well-balanced USVI effort featured four goals and an assist from Dante Poli and a five-assist hat-trick from Nick McEvoy. Nicholas Suits tallied three goals and an assist.
Noah Hoselton led the way for Slovakia with a hat-trick. Overall, the USVI defense was able to stifle Slovakia’s attack on the day.
Each team counted on multiple goalies, and Patrick Crosby stood tall for the USVI, tallying 29 saves and eight goals allowed in over 50 minutes. Slovakia’s Branislav Adam saved 30 of 39 shots.
The USVI have reeled off three wins in a row in placement play and will go for 13th place on Sunday against Italy in a rematch of the team’s meeting in pool play.
Slovakia will take on China on Sunday for 15th place.
Finland – Germany
Finland outlasted Germany, 17-15, in a back-and-forth rollercoaster in the ninth place match.
A wild fourth quarter featured nine goals as Germany trailed by one multiple times but never could quite match the Finns’ productive attack.
Roope Jokela took over for Finland with four goals and five assists. Brett Kujala, who had four goals and two assists, and Jarno Aaltonen, who totaled three goals and two assists also headlined Finland’s effort. Seven players accounted for the team’s 17 goals.
Paul Noring (4G/2A), Lasse Volquardsen (3G/3A), and Gustav Weber (3G/3A) led the way for Germany.
Finland finished in ninth place for a third top-ten finish in the men’s box championship. Germany took home 10th for the second time in a row. Both teams picked up wins in the play-in round of the playoffs.
Switzerland – Greece
Greece dominated Switzerland 8-3 in the second half en route to an 11-5 win in the 23rd place game on Saturday.
Demetre Crews carried the Greek attacking burden again with eight goals. Dimitri Cunning added two, and Jonathan Spiropoulos netted one.
Lukas Heri recorded a hat-trick with three out of Switzerland’s five goals.
Evan Constantopoulos submitted a vintage performance, saving 56 of 61 shots for Greece. On Switzerland’s side, Sven Baeriswyl made 28 saves.
Greece and Switzerland wrap up their campaigns in Utica in 23rd and 24th place respectively.
Australia – Netherlands
Australia finished its men’s box campaign on a high note with a 13-8 win over the Netherlands in the 11th place game on Saturday.
Australia led 5-0 at the end of the first quarter and was able to ride its lead the rest of the way, adding a three-goal run in the fourth quarter after the Netherlands got within three.
Chris Plumb starred for Australia with four goals. Matt Wood added a hat-trick, and two players netted twice in attack.
For the Netherlands, Joshua Toguri recorded a hat-trick, and two other players scored twice. The team was outshot 58-48.
Lucas Deshon and Sam Haines protected the net well for Australia and the Netherlands, respectively, each saving 83% of shots faced.
Both teams advanced to the first round of the playoffs with wins in the play-in round and finishes atop their pool. The Netherlands took home 12th place.
Ireland – Japan
Ireland snuck by Japan 15-14 to secure seventh place in the mens box championship on Saturday.
The two teams traded runs all game and scored six goals in the fourth quarter. Brian Gillis’ shotmaking turned a one-goal deficit in the frame to a two goal lead with a three-goal run in less than three minutes.
Japan fell just short after cutting the margin to one with under two minutes remaining and getting off two shots in the final minute to tie the game.
Gillis did it all offensively, racking up six goals and six assists for Ireland. Brendan O’Sullivan and Conor Foley added hat-tricks.
Russel Bollinger starred again for Japan , with six goals and an assist. Yuya Okumura added a hat-trick, and Hiroki Kanaya tallied two goals and five assists.
Devlin Shanahan and Jon McMillan combined for 48 saves for Ireland.
Japan outshot Ireland 62-37, but the Irish goalkeeping and timely finishing made the difference.
Ireland took seventh place in its fifth appearance in the men’s box championship. Japan recorded an eighth place in its first ever men’s box championship, and both teams advanced to the quarterfinals.
Austria – Chinese Taipei
Austria dominated the fourth quarter to pull away from Chinese Taipei in a 17-12 win in the 19th place match on Saturday.
The game was tied 10-10 in the third quarter before Austria scored twice. Chinese Taipei got a goal back, but Austria scored five of the game’s last six goals in the final eight minutes to end its campaign with a flourish.
Josh Dawick starred again for Austria with eight goals and two assists. Klaus Hauer amassed five goals and three assists to boost the attack as well.
Dennis Jack Burns put up a strong performance for Chinese Taipei, with four goals and two assists. Six other players added goals.
Chinese Taipei will leave Utica in 20th place in its first ever appearance at the men’s box championship.
Hong Kong, China – Jamaica
Hong Kong, China scored twice in the final minute for a wild 16-15 win over Jamaica in the 21st place match.
Hong Kong led 14-11 with the first goal of the fourth quarter but Jamaica responded with four goals in four minutes to lead 15-14 in a furious rally. Right when it looked like Jamaica had flipped the script itself, Corbyn Tao sunk two shots in the final minute for a stunning twist to give Hong Kong the win.
Tao tallied six goals, while Jalen Chaster totaled a hat-trick and six assists. Liam Ferris added two goals and four assists.
Jamaica’s star was Issac Newland with five goals and three assists, and Marcus Minichiello added two goals and eight assists.
Jamaica finished play in 22nd place in its first men’s box championship.
Hong Kong finished second in its pool and narrowly lost in the play-in round as the No. 12 seed, but lost to Chinese Taipei the day after. Hong Kong won its next three games to bounce back into 21st place.
Czechia – Israel
Israel netted seven unanswered goals from the late first to early third quarter to cruise to an 18-10 win over Czechia.
Israel secured fifth place in the World Lacrosse Box Championships.
Four goals from Zach Pall and hat-tricks from Jean-Luc Chetner and Parker Pipher led a well-balanced effort for Israel. Three players added two goals.
Czechia received goals from six different players, and seven players assisted the 10 total goals.
Jackson Hainer put up a strong performance in net for Israel, saving 51 of 61 shots. Czechia played two goalies and allowed 18 goals on 57 shots.
Despite ending tournament play with a loss, Czechia finished in the top sixth and improved a spot on its past two finishes in the event.
Israel finished fifth for the second consecutive time.
Puerto Rico – Mexico
Puerto Rico closed its run in Utica with a 20-16 victory over Mexico in the 25th place match.
Puerto Rico led 6-1 early thanks to a personal 3-0 run from Lance Yapor and kept Mexico from getting to equal footing the rest of the game. Mexico got as close at 12-10 with 20 minutes to go but Puerto Rico’s attack kept up its output to prevent Mexico from ever cutting the deficit to one.
Yapor finished with four goals and three assists, as did Brandon Perkins to lead Puerto Rico. Owen Fasulka added six points as well.
Charlie Frattini III erupted for Mexico with seven goals in defeat. Derek Zacatenco added four assists.
Puerto Rico was appearing in its first ever men’s box championship while Mexico was in its second.
