Canada Rallies Past Iroquois Nationals into Final
Canada fell behind the Iroquois Nationals 4-1 after one quarter, but then clamped down defensively and went on to win 12-6 to advance to Saturday’s FIL World Championship game.
The Iroquois went scoreless for a stretch of over 46 minutes from the 2:05 mark of the first quarter until the 15:23 mark of the fourth quarter. During that time, Canada went on a eight-goal run to take a 9-4 lead.
Curtis Dickson scored three of those goals and finished with a game-high four goals and Geoff Snider was key, winning 16-of-21 faceoffs.
Lyle Thompson led the Iroquois with two goals and an assist, but all came in the first quarter. Canada’s Dillon Roy drew the assignment on Thompson most of the night and was able to keep him in check. Randy Staats also had two goals for the Nationals.

USA Rolls to World Championship Final
The United States is headed to the championship game of the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse World Championship, presented by Trusted Choice, after beating Australia 22-3 in the semifinals on Thursday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
The U.S. improved to a perfect 6-0 in the tournament with the win and controlled play from the start. The U.S. scored the first seven goals of the game and limited Australia to just 11 shots in the contest.
David Lawson had a team-high six points on four goals and two assists and Brendan Mundorf, Paul Rabil, Max Seibald and Kevin Leveille each scored three goals. Once again, the U.S. dominated possession time by controlling the faceoff battle. Chris Eck won 13-of-14 and Greg Gurenlian won 13-of-15 for the United States.
Matt Diver, Nigel Morton and Anson Carter all scored for Australia.
The U.S. will play Canada in the championship game on Saturday night at 7 p.m. (ESPNU). Australia will play the Iroquois Nationals in the third place game on Saturday at 2 p.m. (ESPN3).

Scotland, England Win Battles for Blue Division in OT
Scotland’s Jimmy McBride scored the game-winner in overtime in a 10-9 victory over Japan. The victory assures Scotland of its best finish ever and moves it into the Blue Division for the 2018 FIL World Championship in Manchester, England. England held on to its Blue Division spot by beating Israel 10-9 in overtime on a goal by Nicholas Watson.
Scotland and England will meet in the 5th place game on Saturday at 11 a.m. on Field 10 on ESPN3.
Japan took a 9-7 lead on Scotland early in the fourth quarter, but Dan Heighway scored back-to-back goals midway through the quarter to tie it at 9-9. The score remained that way until McBride netted his game-winner with 51 seconds left in the second overtime.
Japan outshot Scotland 51-29, but only put 20 of them on goal with Scotland’s Dean Stewart (eight) and Ethan Harris (three) combining for 11 saves. Heighway led Scotland with three goals and Kyle Buchanan had four assists. Yuji Tadahira had two goal and three assists for Japan.
England jumped out to a 5-0 lead on Israel, but Israel got back into the game with a five-goal third quarter that tied the score 7-7 entering the final quarter. England’s Aaron Prosser scored the first two goals of the quarter, but Kyle Bergman and Matthew Cherry scored for Israel, Cherry’s coming with 43 seconds left to send it into overtime. Watson then scored with 34 seconds left in the first overtime period for the only goal of the extra sessions.
Watson led England with four goals and Ben McAllister had a sterling game with 23 saves. Ari Sussman led Israel with three goals while Cherry had two and Casey Cittadino had three assists.
Colombia finished 37th in the tournament, winning its final game by an 11-4 score over Costa Rica. Sebastian Velez made 10 saves in the win and Colombia’s Timothy Drumtra had three goals and two assists and Julian Gomez also had three goals. Brandon Rojas Sala made 10 saves while allowing just seven goals in just under three quarters of action for Costa Rica.
Germany assured itself of a top ten finish by beating Sweden 13-10. Sweden led 6-4 at the half, but Germany tallied six third quarter goals to move in front 11-7 and Sweden never got closer than three the rest of the way.
Kilian Bombosch had three goals for Germany and Simon Giourmetakis added two goals and three assists. Kevin Powers and Sanny Falk each had three goals for Sweden and Alexander Edena had two goals and three assists.
Germany will play Ireland for ninth place on Friday at 5 p.m. in a game carried on ESPN3. Sweden will play New Zealand at 2 p.m. on Friday for 11th place, also an ESPN3 game.
Gresham Keys Wales Comeback Over Latvia
Eighteen-year-old Andrew Gresham scored the game-winning 39 seconds into sudden death overtime to lift Wales over Latvia 16-15. Gresham, who played for Wales U19 team in Finland in 2012, also keyed Wales’ dramatic flurry at the end of regulation. Wales scored three goals in the final two minutes of regulation to force overtime. Greshman scored the last two, including the game-tying goal with 36 seconds remaining.
Greshman led all scorers with four goals. Paul Simpson added three goals and two assists for Wales and Eoin Dunne had a pair of goals. Glebs Supenko had three goals and three assists for Latvia and Christopher Zarins had two goals and four assists.
Wales will play Italy for 17th place tomorrow and Latvia will play Poland for 19th place.
Hong Kong’s Van Sternbergh scored with 46 seconds remaining to give Hong Kong a 14-13 victory over Bermuda. The back-and-forth game featured nine ties and neither team led by more than two goals.
Sternbergh led Hong Kong with four goals and Jay Wich and Cheung Wai Cheng each had three goals. Quinn McKeown led Bermuda with four goals while Douglas Bell had three goals and two assists and Drew Jenkins had two goals and two assists and won 22-of-31 faceoffs.
Hong Kong will play Turkey tomorrow for 21st place and Bermuda will play Mexico for 23rd.
Filbotte Scores Sudden Death Game Winner for Italy
Thomas Filbotte scored just over a minute into sudden death overtime to lead Italy past Poland 15-14 in a shootout. Poland’s Pawel Hamrol scored with 1:59 left in regulation to give Poland a 12-11 lead, but Italy’s Filbotte answered just 37 seconds later to force overtime.
In the second overtime period, Italy’s Frederico Galperti gave his team a 14-13 lead with 1:12 to play, but Poland had the answer this time. Jedrze Baginski scored with 39 seconds left to send it into sudden death overtime when Politi delivered the game-winner.
Filbotte led Italy with six goals and John St. John added four. Colin Jesien led Poland with five and Larry Cerasi added three. Poland’s Christian Dzwilews made 17 saves.
Italy will play in the 17th place game tomorrow and Poland will play in the 19th place game.
Ireland held off a late charge from New Zealand to post a 12-10 victory. Ireland led 7-2 early in the second quarter, but New Zealand stormed back in the final quarter, pulling to within 11-10 on John Clayton’s goal with 1:57 to play. Ireland’s Michael Shea put it out of reach on his goal with 18 seconds left.
Connor Sweeney made 18 saves for Ireland and Michael McTernan paced the offense with four goals. Clayton led New Zealand with five goals.
Ireland will play for ninth place tomorrow and New Zealand will play for 11th place.
Goalies Shine in Turkey, Finland Victories
Jacob Adoni made 19 saves in Turkey’s 9-4 win over Mexico and Hayden Johnstone made 11 saves while allowing one goal in a half of action in Finland’s 15-6 win over the Netherlands.
Adoni came into the game with a tournament leading 65.0 save percentage and only improved that number with his 19 saves against just four goals allowed. Mexico outshot Turkey 44-23, but couldn’t solve Adoni. Bijan Firouzan paced the Turkey offense with three goals and four assists. Mike Vila led Mexico with two goals.
Turkey will play in the 21st place game tomorrow and Mexico will play in the 23rd place game.
Finland edge the Netherlands 7-6 during pool play, but had an easier time today in its victory. Finland led 7-5 at at the half and then Johnstone shut down the Netherlands in the second half, allowing just the single goal. Anssi Kaisalmi had four goals for Finland and Jarno Aaltonen and Rick Sainthill each had three. Graham Bergsma led the Netherlands with two goals.
Finland will play the Czech Republic in the 13th place game and the Netherlands will play Switzerland in the 15th place game.
Buchan’s Monster Game Leads China Comeback Over Korea
Korea led China 9-2 at the half, but China erupted with 14 second half goals for a wild 16-15 victory. Matthew Bailey scored the game-winner with 19 seconds left from an assist from Tyler Buchan. Buchan had a monster game with 12 points (9g, 3a) and scored four consecutive goals during one stretch to erase a 9-5 Korea lead and tie the game 9-9.
Dylan Bassham (4g, 3a) and Bailey (3g, 4a) also had big games for China and Michael Tsiang won 20-of-31 faceoffs to help fuel the comeback. Eungyoo Ryoo had four goals and two assists for Korea while Sung Mo Ku (3g) and Jae Chun Lee (2g, 3a) also had big games.
China will face Uganda for 33rd place tomorrow and Korea will face Argentina for 35th place after Uganda earned its second win of the tournament with an 11-5 decision over Argentina. Casiro Onen scored seven goals and Kenneth Kasule added three for Uganda. Five different players scored goals for Argentina and Michael Gvozden made 13 saves.
Danny de la Casa scored four goals and added two assists as Spain defeated Russia 9-5. Alvaro Coucerio made nine saves to anchor Spain’s defense and Zachary Cowan dished three assists for Russia.
Spain will play Thailand for 29th place and Russia will meet France for 31st.
Norway Edges Austria in Overtime Thriller
Lars Rysst scored his third goal of the game with 27 seconds left to lead Norway to a thrilling 11-10 overtime victory against Austria on Thursday morning. Neither team led by more than two goals in the game and it was tied eight times before Rystt delivered the game-winner.
Rystt had three goals, two of them in overtime, to share top scoring honors for Norway with Carl-Peter Lian, while Per-Arne Winsnes Kvalvag had two goals and four assist. Klaus Hauer led Austria with three goals and Philipp Holzmuller and Christoph Kunert combined for 14 saves.
Norway will play Slovakia for 25th place tomorrow and Austria will play Belgium for 27th place.
Colton McCaffrey tallied six goals as Thailand rolled to a 14-4 victory over France. Pongprapat Suriyodorn made nine saves and Kohei Naoi won 12-of-19 faceoffs in the victory. Felix DeClercq led France with three goals.
Thailand will play in the 29th place game tomorrow and France will play in the 31st place game.
Czech Republic Downs Switzerland to Open Play
Pavel Dosly scored four goals as the Czech Republic opened the eighth day of play at the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse World Championship, presented by Trusted Choice, with an 8-2 victory over Switzerland. Both goalies were outstanding as Jakub Mares made eight saves for the Czech Republic while allowing just two goals and Swiss goalie Tyson Ehinger made 13 saves.
The Czech Republic advances to tomorrow’s 13th place game and Switzerland advances to the 15th place game.
Slovakia unleased 59 shots against Belgium’s defense and Belguim goalie David Taylor was ready for the task – stopping 20 shots, but his team couldn’t generate enough offense as Slovakia posted a 6-3 victory. Noah Hoselton scored three goals for Slovakia and Stanislav Mraz and Nathaniel Gaspar combined for 10 saves. Tibor Van den Wildenbergh had two goals and an assist to lead Belgium.
Slovakia will play in the 25th place game tomorrow and Belgium will play in the 27th place game.
