Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA – World Lacrosse announced today the Hungarian Lacrosse Federation and Puerto Rico Lacrosse have gained Full Member status with the international federation for men’s and women’s lacrosse.
The two organizations are recognized by World Lacrosse as the National Governing Bodies for men’s and women’s lacrosse in their respective countries.
The elevation in status from Associate Member was confirmed by a unanimous vote of the World Lacrosse Board of Directors.
“We enthusiastically welcome the Hungarian Lacrosse Federation and Puerto Rico Lacrosse as Full Members of World Lacrosse,” said Bob DeMarco, World Lacrosse Development Director. “In both countries, the National Governing Bodies have been built on solid foundations and continue their development initiatives in all areas. As with our entire membership, these organizations are committed to expanding opportunities for participation in lacrosse and upholding the values of our great game.”
The Hungarian Lacrosse Federation first became an Associate Member of World Lacrosse (known formerly as the Federation of International Lacrosse) in January 2011. Puerto Rico Lacrosse became an Associate Member in October 2016.
As Full Members, the Hungarian Lacrosse Federation and Puerto Rico Lacrosse will now have a delegate with voting privileges at the World Lacrosse General Assembly. In addition, National Teams representing both countries are now eligible for medal-round play in World Championship events.
As the international federation for one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, World Lacrosse has 63 member-National Governing Bodies — an increase of more than 240 percent since 2002. In November 2018, World Lacrosse received Provisional Recognition from the International Olympic Committee.
