Australia asserted its authority over Japan in a 11-7 quarterfinal win at the 2025 World Lacrosse Men’s U20 Championship on Thursday afternoon in Seogwipo, Korea.
Australia, a fourth-place finisher at the last two editions of the event, had its matchup circled with Japan, the fifth place finisher in 2022, especially after Japan had flown through the first six days of the tournament as one of the most impressive teams in the field.
The third-seeded Australia was more than ready for the challenge, and denied Japan’s bid for a record finish with a resounding display of defensive prowess and forceful shot-making. Australia never let Japan’s attackers get comfortable and Ethan Jaffe cleaned up the shots on goal with 10 saves at a 58% rate.
Australia’s early hot shooting led to a 5-1 advantage at halftime, and Australia did not let up until a late 5-0 Japan run smoothed over the scoreline.
Australia secured a top-four finish for the third consecutive appearance and a bid in the semifinal round against Canada on Friday at 4 p.m.
Japan will try to match its best-ever finish in placement play towards fifth place, taking on Jamaica on Thursday at 4:10 p.m.
Will Dallisson and Hudson Robb starred for Australia, with four points for Dallisson and three goals and an assist for Robb, who has shown himself to be one of the most talented attackers in the championship despite Australia’s tough Pool A start.
Rentaro Okuyama had three points to lead Japan. Kyle Hata won 65% of face-offs.
