Lacrosse Australia announces creation of Australia Lacrosse Hall of Fame

Lacrosse Australia announced the creation of the Australia Lacrosse Hall of Fame (ALHOF) this week, a significant milestone in recognizing the outstanding achievements of Australian lacrosse champions.

The ALHOF will honor individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the development, promotion, and success of lacrosse at both the national and international levels. This landmark initiative aims to preserve the rich legacy of lacrosse in Australia while inspiring future generations to continue building the sport.

By the time of the creation of the Federation of International Lacrosse in 1974, lacrosse was being played in every state of Australia and lacrosse’s history in Australia dates back to the 1800s. Australia has won the World Lacrosse Women’s Championship twice in 1986 and 2005, and the Women’s U19 Championship in 1995.

Lacrosse Australia Chair, Abbie Brice (née Burgess), shared her excitement about this milestone:

“For a number of years, Lacrosse Australia has aspired to create a Hall of Fame to honor those who have shaped the legacy of lacrosse in this country. Thanks to the collaborative efforts and shared vision of this committee and Lacrosse Australia, this dream is now becoming a reality.”

Lacrosse Australia has appointed a Selection Committee, representing both men’s and women’s lacrosse from the three main lacrosse states. A formal criteria and selection policy have been established to ensure the highest standards of recognition. It is envisioned that a maximum of 10 female and 10 male lacrosse players from the modern era (1962 onwards) will be inducted in the inaugural class.

“I thank the newly formed committee for their dedication and passion,” said Brice. “I have no doubt that the first inductees will include some of the most remarkable figures in Australian lacrosse history. The ALHOF will serve as a lasting tribute to their excellence and an inspiration for future generations of players, coaches and supports. This is an exciting new chapter for lacrosse in Australia, and we can’t wait to share this journey with the entire lacrosse community.”

Nominations for the first class of inductees will open in March 2025 and close on 30 September 2025, with proposed inductions will be presented to Lacrosse Australia by November 2025.
