New Zealand closes pool play with win over Scotland

New Zealand ended its pool play slate with a 13-8 win over Scotland at Kowloon Tsai on day six in Hong Kong, China.

Despite the 0-3 start for the two teams heading into the game, they had both been competitive against Mexico and Italy in a tight pool and were hungry for a win.

New Zealand came out furious with a 6-0 run in the first 11 minutes, and after Scotland punched back with three goals, New Zealand pushed past another three. The Kiwis took a 9-4 lead into halftime.

Scotland cut the lead to four halfway through the third quarter, but New Zealand found one more burst with a three goal run that helped see out the win.

Goalkeeper Sam Crowther was named the player of the match with eight saves for New Zealand on 16 shots faced, including five in the second half.

Dinithi Bamunusinghe, Sienna Neill, Kano Sugawara and Isabelle Vrensen each scored two goals for New Zealand. Bamunusinghe added four draw wins and Ava Gatie had five.

Eight different players scored Scotland’s eight goals.

New Zealand finished in fourth place in the pool and will compete in placement play, beginning on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. HKT against Chinese Taipei. Scotland resumes action on Thursday against Jamaica at 8:30 a.m. HKT.
