The No. 1 United States had its way with No. 4 Australia in the semifinals, winning 11-2 at Snapdragon Stadium on Thursday night at the 2023 World Lacrosse Men’s Championship.
The United States continues its streak of top-two finishes in the competition, achieving the feat for the fourteenth time. The USA will face its longstanding rival Canada in the final on Saturday at 4 p.m. PT, looking to claim its 11th title and become the first back-to-back champion in the event since 2002.
“Playing for a gold medal, thats what you dream of as a little kid,” said defender Jack Rowlett. “These are my best friends now, I love all these guys and I want to win for them. Playing for each other is how we’ll have the most success.”
Eight players scored for the USA in a typical balanced win. Michael Sowers and Ryan Conrad each had two goals and an assist.
Blaze Riorden made four saves in the second half and TD Ierlan and Trevor Baptiste dominated on face-offs once again. The United States defense was excellent from start to finish, limiting Australia to just six shots on goal while causing 11 turnovers, led by three from Rowlett.
“Throughout the tournament, we’ve been getting better and better, holding teams and limiting shots,” said Rowlett. “It’s a complete group effort, getting guys to buy in this tournament and I think it’s starting to pay off for us. Our goalkeepers, Blaze and Jack steal ones for us when we mess up, which is nice to have.”
Sean Aaron made nine saves for Australia.
