LIMERICK, Ireland – The Netherlands won the platinum bracket on day ten at the 2022 World Lacrosse Men’s U21 Championship to claim 13th place.
The Netherlands avenged a narrow loss in pool play with a 12-7 win to upend a previously unbeaten Hong Kong, China team.
Luke Macdonald scored four goals and added two assists to lead the Netherlands, while Christian Della Rocco chipped in three goals and an assist.
Ka Chun Tong won 19 of 22 face-offs for Hong Kong, China.
The other biggest wins of the day came from Japan and England, who won in championship consolation play to advance to the fifth place game.
Wales opened the day with an 8-2 win over Latvia. Owain Braddock tallied four goals to bring his tournament total to 18, the sixth-most in Limerick. Oscar Mellor recorded three assists. Goalkeeper Will Macdonald made six saves on eight shots.
Latvia goalkeeper Ryan Richters made 13 saves on the 17 shots he faced and leads the tournament with 71 saves total.
Israel pulled out an 8-6 victory over Germany in an exciting game that was tied on three separate occasions in the second half before Gregory Wells scored the go-ahead goal with just over six minutes to play. Wells finished with two goals and Samuel Trojano scored two goals to go with an assist. Goalkeeper Benjamin Friedman was excellent in the win, making 15 saves on 21 shots.
Felix Michelfeit scored three goals for Germany, and midfielder Adrian Appel won 13 of 17 face-offs.
In the 21st place match, Poland held on to defeat Uganda 11-6, after taking an 8-1 lead into half time. Jan Šmiegel and Kamil Grabowski both posted lines of two goals and an assist while Błażej Prusek had a goal and two assists. Goalkeeper Igor Mrozowski made 10 saves on 16 shots.
Jamaica weathered a furious comeback effort from the Czech Republic to win 11-10. Jamaica led 11-4 after scoring first in the fourth quarter, but the Czech Republic scored six unanswered goals to get within one before finally running up against the clock. Joshua McLaughlin paced the offense for Jamaica with three goals while both Khairi Sears and Stone Evans notched a goal and two assists.
Jan Fišer scored four goals for the Czech Republic, including three in the fourth quarter.
In the 15th place match, Sweden pulled away from Korea to win 11-8 after the game was tied after 40 minutes. Jonas Hunter and Ludvig Thomsson both scored four goals to spearhead Sweden’s attack and Hunter is tied for the most goals in the tournament with 24. Gustav Thomsson tied the tournament-high for face-off win percentage after winning 10 out of 10, and Erik McCallion performed well on the other face-offs, winning nine of 13.
Luke Smith totaled five points on four goals and an assist for Korea. Goalkeeper Theodore Kim made 26 saves on 37 shots in one of the goalkeeping displays of the tournament. Ethan Ahsley scored two goals to remain tied atop the goals leaderboard with 24.
Japan edged Ireland, 5-4, in another defensive battle. Ryuta Ishikawa had two goals for Japan, but the defense was the story of the game, allowing just seven shots on goal.
Joe Walsh made 11 saves on 16 shots faces for Ireland.
England overcame Puerto Rico, 10-9, in an overtime thriller. Daniel Hilditch scored the winning goal just 48 seconds into the sudden victory frame for his seventh goal of the game, tying the single-game high.
Joshua Balcarcel scored three goals for Puerto Rico.
