What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is an individual’s tendency to perceive situations as threatening and respond with an increase in a state or trait anxiety.

There are several types of anxiety, and individuals may experience anxiety in one or more of these ways.

Trait Anxiety: relates to an aspect of personality in which nervousness is a stable personality trait for an individual

State Anxiety: Refers to temporary feelings of anxiety in a particular situation. It is the state of emotional arousal following a perceived threat or circumstance

Cognitive Anxiety: Worrying thoughts

Somatic Anxiety: Physiological arousal (sweaty palms, increased heart rate)

  • It is estimated that 1 in every 5 experience significantly anxious mood at some point
  • Anxiety can effect any kind of person at any stage of their life
  • At some level we will all experience anxiety
