The South Africa women’s team appeared in it first ever international competition at the 2025 Home Internationals in Scotland, playing three games in early April.
South Africa joined World Lacrosse as a member in 2021, as the fourth member from Africa. South African lacrosse began in 2007 when brothers Kip and Harrison Hart launched the South African Lacrosse Project (SALP) during their summer holidays in Vaalwater.
The project introduced the sport through camps with international coaches covering various aspects of lacrosse, helping the community gain a deep understanding of the game. These camps, held annually until 2017, attracted 100-150 boys and girls, aged 11 to 25. After the project ended, the South African Lacrosse Association (SALA) took over, working on legalizing and growing the sport.
The first women’s international squad was formed for Home Internationals competition, which has been held for over 100 years. The women’s lacrosse program has shown great promise, with enthusiastic players representing South Africa for the first time. The future of South African lacrosse looks bright, with hopes for further development and growth.
The women’s team competed against England, Scotland and Wales in the Women’s Senior B competition, scoring 12 games in three games.
“We are working towards becoming a full member of World Lacrosse, and to enter African Championships to progress our international standing and reputation,” said a spokesperson for SALA. “We eagerly look forward to what’s to come. SALA would like to appreciate the support from WL, AAL, sponsors, parents, fans and most importantly players who are dedicating their precious time to make sure that the rainbow nation flag flies high.”
